younger, but now she doesn’t have time.
She usually plays the piano at home
PRESENT HABITS
• For present habits use Usually or Normally +
present simple.
Examples:
I usually get up at 7.30
I normally eat out
I don’t usually go out during the week.
Do you usually walk to work?
PAST HABITS
• For past habits use Used to / Didn’t use to +
infinitive. Used to does not exist in the present
tense.
• We use Used to for things that were true over
a period of time in the past. It usually refers to
something which is not true now.
I used to smoke
• We often use not ….any more / any longer
( = not now) with the present simple to
contrast with used to.
I used to go to the gym but I don’t any more/
any longer.
We used to be closed friends but we don’t see
each other any more.
• When using used to in questions we’ll use the
auxiliary verb (Did) and the infinitive as usual
(use to)
Did you use to wear glasses?
• The same happens in negatives
She didn’t use to have fair hair
• Would is also possible when talking about
past habits but with a slight difference, its
normally used for actions repeated again and
again in the past, which even became
annoying.
They would sleep until noon in at weekends.
