Chapter 26

1. The Lord appears to Isaac and

flee the famine.
2. God reaffirms the covenant with
Isaac.

Chapter 27

The Blessing of Jacob
1. Isaac sends Esau to hunt game
for “savory food”.
2. Rebekah devises a plan to
disguise Jacob to receive his
father’s blessing through
deception.

God had told Rebekah that the
“elder shall serve the younger” she
was determined that Jacob would
receive the inheritance.
Isaac is suspicious but is fooled.
Rebekah dresses Jacob in Esau’s
clothes and disguises his arms like

the older son, Jacob receives the
blessing of his father.

deceiver of others.

what it’s like to be deceived.
3. He learns to live as a man
devoted to the will of God.

Chapter 28

Jacob’s Ladder
1. It was 600 miles from Jacob’s
home in Beersheba
southwest of the Dead Sea.

2. Jacob spent his first night homesick
at a spot he later named Bethel.
3. of a ladder reaching up into heaven
upon which angels ascended and
descended.

The ladder symbolized the
continual communication open
between him and God.
God renews the promise he made
to Abraham and now extends and
confirms it to Jacob.

Jacob’s Life In Haran – Jacob Meets
Rachel.
1. Rachel comes to water her
sheep, she was a shepherdess.

the well and waters her sheep.

Chapter 30

The Children of Jacob
1. A total of 11 sons were born
to Jacob’s wives and
concubines.
2. After many barren years
Rachel gives birth to Joseph.

Attention needs to be paid to the
way Jacobs sons were grouped.
A. The first 4 sons were born to
Leah. Their names point to
deliverance from Egypt.

Bilhah bore the fifth and sixth sons.
Their names point to the
wilderness experience.
C. Zilpah bore the seventh and eighth
sons. The ninth and tenth sons
were bore by Leah point to
Israel’s occupation of Canaan.

twelfth sons their births were
separate from the others and
pointed to the Kingdom under
David and Solomon.

Laban and Jacob agree to part
ways and they divide the sheep.
Laban is up to his old tricks and
deceives Jacob by hiding sheep.
God intervenes and multiplies
Jacob’s flock.

Chapter 31

God tells Jacob it’s time to leave.
1. Jacob takes his wives and
sons and leaves Laban.
2. Rachel steals her father’s
household idols and hides
them in a camel’s saddlebag.

days.
God intervenes that no harm is
done to Jacob.
Laban and Jacob make a covenant

Chapter 32

Esau comes to meet Jacob
1. Messengers are sent ahead to
talk to Esau.
2. Jacob fears for his life for
deceiving his brother.

The messengers tell him 400 men
are with Esau.
Jacob prays and reminds God of
His promise.

5. A peace offering is sent to Esau
(a large herd of animals).
6. The family is sent ahead, Jacob

Wrestling with God
1. A Man wrestles with him
through the night until
daybreak.
2. He does not prevail and
touches Jacob’s hip and
dislocates it.

Jacob tells the Lord he will not stop
without a blessing.
The Lord changes Jacob’s name
to Israel.

Jacob is told he has struggled with
God and men and has prevailed.
The dislocated hip becomes a
permanent disability.

Chapter 33

Jacob and Esau finally meet
1. Jacob prepares himself for a
confrontation with his brother.
2. A group is sent ahead to meet
Esau as a peace offering.

Esau runs to meet Jacob and
embraces his brother.
4. He questions why the large
greeting and is told they were a
gift.

At first the gift is refused, but Esau
finally accepts.
After the meeting Esau returns

Jacob continues into Canaan and
buys property for the family to
dwell on.

Chapter 34

The defilement of Dinah
1. Dinah the daughter of Leah
and Jacob visits the daughters
of the land.
2. Shechem the son of Hamor
takes Dinah and violates her.

Shechem asks his father to obtain
her for his wife.
Jacob hears of the violation of his
daughter and is angered.

The sons of Jacob were very angry
about the incident.
Hamor seeks permission from
Jacob for his son to marry Dinah.
Hamor is told there can be no
marriage to uncircumcised Hivites.

But if they agree to be circumcised
the marriage could be arranged.
Agreement is reached to
circumcise all the Hivite males
including Hamor and Shechem.

10. On the third day after circumcision,
Jacob’s sons Simeon and Levi
took swords and slew all the males
of the city, including Hamor and
Shechem.
11. Dinah was avenged and taken
home.

The death of Rachel and Isaac
1. God tells Jacob to relocate to
Bethel and live there and
make an altar to God.
2. God reaffirms the covenant of
Abraham and Isaac to Jacob.

Rachel goes into hard labor and
dies while delivering Benjamin.

Chapter 37

The Life of Joseph
Joseph’s family sins against him
1. The story starts when Joseph
is 17 years old.
2. Joseph brings a bad report of
his brothers to his father.

Joseph was his father’s favorite
son, and his father made him a
coat of many colors.
Because of the favoritism he was
despised by his brothers.

A dream causes big trouble. He
tells his brothers they were
binding sheaves and their sheaves
bowed down to his sheaves.
Another dream is shared with them
that the sun, moon and 11 stars
bowed down to him.

7. Joseph is sent on an errand by
Jacob to check on his brothers,
the brothers plot to kill Joseph
and throw him in a pit.
8. Reuben convinces them not to kill
him, but just cast him in a pit
and stripped him of his colorful
coat.

9. Joseph is sold to some
Ishmaelites for 20 shekels of
silver and they took him to Egypt.

10. The coat is covered with goat’s
blood and taken to Jacob for him
to identify it. Jacob is convinced
his son is dead.
11. Joseph is sold to Potiphar an
officer of Pharaoh.

Chapter 38

Joseph’s family sins with the
Canaanites.
1. Judah departs from his
brothers and marries a
Canaanite.

2. That union produces 3 sons.
The first born son’s name was Er.
3. Judah gets a wife for Er and her
name is Tamar.
4. Er was wicked in the eyes of the
Lord and was killed.

Onan the second son was told to
take Tamar and produce an
heir. He disobeys and is killed.
Judah’s wife dies and Tamar lives
in Judah’s house.

She disguises herself as a harlot
and lies with Judah.
8. She asks for a token of promise
for payment. His ring, cord, and
staff.

Payment is sent and the harlot
cannot be found. Judah is told
that his daughter-in-law was with
child by harlotry.

10. Judah condemns her for her
actions and has her brought forth.
She says that she is pregnant by
the one that owns the items
she took as a promise.

11. Judah acknowledges ownership
of the items.
12. Tamar gives birth to twins.

Chapter 39

Joseph’s test with Potiphar’s wife
1. Joseph is very successful and
is made overseer of Potiphar’s
house.

2. Joseph was a handsome fellow and
Potiphar’s wife desired him.
3. She makes repeated attempts to
have Joseph and finally she
caught him by his garment as he
fled outside.
4. Potiphar is angered and has
Joseph put in prison.

Chapter 40

Joseph’s test with the Egyptian
society.
1. Pharaoh is angry with his chief
butler and baker and puts
them in the same prison as
Joseph.

The butler and baker have dreams
in prison.

The butler tells Joseph his dream
of a vine with 3 branches, the
branches budded and it’s
blossoms shot forth, and it’s
clusters brought forth ripe grapes.
He took the Pharaoh’s cup,
pressed the grapes in the cup and
placed it in Pharaoh’s hand.

4. Joseph interprets the dream.
The 3 branches are 3 days and
within 3 days Pharaoh will restore
him to his place.

5. The baker had a similar dream. He
had 3 white baskets on his head.
There were all kinds of baked
goods for Pharaoh, and the
birds ate them out of the basket
on my head.

The dream was interpreted as the
3 baskets are 3 days. And within 3
days Pharaoh would lift off his
head and hang him on a tree and
the birds would eat his flesh.

The third day was Pharaoh’s
birthday and it came to pass as
Joseph had predicted.

Chapter 41

Joseph’s test with Pharaoh’s dreams
1.
After 2 years Pharaoh had a dream,
and he stood by a river. Out of the river
came 7 cows, fine looking and fat; and
they fed in the meadow. Then 7 other
cows came up after them out of the
river looking ugly and gaunt and stood
by the other cows on the bank of the
river.

The ugly cows ate up the 7 fine
looking cows. So Pharaoh awoke
In a second dream 7 heads of
grain came up on one stalk,
plump and good. Then 7 thin
heads blighted by the east wind,
sprang up after them.

The 7 thin heads devoured the 7
plump and full heads.
5. Pharaoh awoke and was troubled.
He summoned all the magicians
and wise men of Egypt. There was
no one that could interpret the
dream.

The butler remembers Joseph
interpreting his dream. Pharaoh
sends for Joseph.
7. Joseph tells Pharaoh God will
answer his question.

8. Joseph tells Pharaoh his 2 dreams
are one. The 7 cows are seven
good years and the 7 ugly cows
are seven years of famine.

Seven years of great plenty will
come followed by a great famine
for seven years. Pharaoh was told
to save one fifth of the produce in
the seven plentiful years and
appoint a wise man to oversee the
land of Egypt.

10. Pharaoh places Joseph over all
the land of Egypt second in
command only to Pharaoh.
11. Joseph is 30 years old and
Pharaoh gives him a wife named
Asenath.

12. Joseph gathers as much grain as
the sands of the sea.
13. Two sons are born before the
famine begins and their names
were Ephraim and Manasseh
14. The famine begins in all lands, but
in Egypt there is plenty.

Chapter 42

Joseph’s brothers visit Egypt
1. Jacob sends Joseph’s 10
brothers to Egypt to buy grain.
2. The youngest brother Benjamin
was not sent.

Joseph’s brothers come and bow
down to him seeking to buy grain.
(remember Joseph’s childhood
dream?) He did!!

4. Joseph puts his brothers to the test.
The brothers are told to prove they
tell the truth by producing the
youngest brother. They are told
they are spies.

Simeon is held as a hostage until
the brothers return with Benjamin.
The 9 brothers are given grain to
take home, and their money is
returned to them.

The story is recanted to their
father Jacob.
Jacob refuses to send Benjamin
to Egypt.

Chapter 43

Joseph’s brothers second journey
to Egypt.
1. The famine was severe and
more food is needed. The
brothers are sent to Egypt to
buy more food.

Jacob is told that they must bring
back Benjamin if they expect more
food.
Judah takes personal responsibility
for Benjamin.

When the brothers return to Egypt
they are taken to Joseph’s home.
The brothers are worried that they
might become slaves.
Joseph sees his younger brother
Benjamin and weeps in his
chamber.

Chapter 44

Once again the law of retribution –
History repeats itself.
1. The steward of Joseph’s house
is told to fill their sacks with
food and send them on their
way.

He is also told to put a silver cup in
the youngest brother’s sack.
After they leave Joseph has them
followed and searched for the cup.
They agree the person found with
the cup would be Joseph’s slave.

The cup was found in Benjamin’s
sack.
They return to Joseph’s home and
are questioned.
Judah makes a long plea to Joseph
to keep him as his slave and
let the younger brother return to
their father.

Chapter 45

Joseph could not restrain himself
and clears the room.
1. Joseph makes himself known
to his brothers.

He weeps aloud and the Egyptians
and the house of Pharaoh heard
him.
Joseph goes on to explain God’s
purpose in sending him to Egypt.

He explains there are still five more
years of famine left.
The brothers are told to return to
Canaan and bring their father
Jacob and families back to Egypt.

Jacob is told that his son is still alive
and governor of Egypt.
Israel is pleased and agrees to go
see his son.

Chapter 46

Jacob’s family safe in Egypt
1. God tells Jacob not to fear
going to Egypt, He will make
him a great nation there.

2. So they took their livestock,
goods, and families that they had
acquired in the land of Canaan
and went to Egypt.
3. A total of 70 people travel to Egypt.

Joseph travels to the land of
Goshen to meet his father.
Jacob’s life is complete now he
knows his son is alive.

Pharaoh is told that Joseph’s
brothers are shepherds.
1. Shepherds are considered an
abomination to the Egyptians.
2. Pharaoh gives his permission
to dwell in the land of Goshen.

Jacob blesses Pharaoh and
Pharaoh asks his age?
4. Jacob answers that the days of
the years of his pilgrimage were
130.

gathered up and given to Pharaoh.

horses, flocks, cattle and donkeys.
The Egyptians sold their land to
Pharaoh because the famine was
so severe.

Joseph gives the people seed to
sow the land with the condition
that one fifth of the harvest would
go to the Pharaoh.
10. The time was close for Jacob to
die and he has Joseph promise
to bury him with his fathers.

Chapter 48

Israel (Jacob) adopts Ephraim and
Manasseh.
1. Jacob tells Joseph of God
blessing him in the land of
Canaan and repeats the
blessing to Joseph.

2. Jacob blesses Ephraim and
Manasseh. Once again the
younger (Ephraim) was blessed
before the older. This displeased
Joseph and Jacob explains that
he knows the difference.

descendants shall become a great
nation.
Manasseh would also become a
great nation.

Jacob calls all his sons together
and delivers quite a prophecy.

because he defiled his father’s
bed.

Simeon and Levi – curse be their
anger, they slayed a man.
Judah you are he who your
brothers shall praise. The scepter
shall not depart from Judah.

Zebulun shall dwell by the sea. He
shall be a haven for ships.
Issachar is a strong donkey. He
bowed his shoulder to bear a
burden and became a band of
slaves.

Dan shall judge his people, as one
of the tribes of Israel. A viper
by the path.
Gad, a troop shall tramp upon him,
But he shall triumph at last.

Bread from Asher shall be rich,
and he shall yield royal dainties.
Naphtali is a deer let loose, he
gives goodly words.

10. Joseph is a fruitful bough, a fruitful
bough by a well, the archers
have shot at him and hated him.
But his bow remained in
strength and the arms of his hands
were made strong…..the
blessing continues.

11. Benjamin is a ravenous wolf, in the
morning he shall devour the
prey, and at night he shall divide
the spoil.
12. When Jacob had finished he
breathed his last, and was
gathered to his people.

Chapter 50

Israel is prepared for burial.
1. Joseph commands his
servants to embalm his father.
Forty days were required for
the process.

Joseph seeks permission from
Pharaoh to bury his father in
Canaan.
Jacob was buried in the cave that
Abraham had bought to bury
Sarah.
