Previous Curriculum Review
Beautiful skin is determined by the healthy
structure and proper function of components
within the skin.
To maintain beautiful skin, and slow the rate
at which it ages, the structure and function of
the skin must be supplemented and
protected.

guard against free radical damage.
Translucent, luminous tone:
Avoid UV damage and other causes of
discoloration; maintain healthy cell
renewal.
Smooth, even texture:

clear; promote healthy cell repair.
Introduction
Essential Needs of the Skin
The skin has up to ten essential needs
for optimal health and beauty.
Determining and meeting your skin’s
essential needs with a comprehensive
skin care regimen is critical to
maintaining the healthy function and
beautiful appearance of the skin.
Synergistic Approach to Skin Care
The best skin care products are
designed to work synergistically to
meet the essential needs of the
skin. As they do this, they maintain
and enhance the health and natural
beauty of the skin.
Essential Needs of the Skin
The skin’s ten essential skin care needs
can be divided into two categories:
• Basic needs—the minimum, daily needs or
regimen steps all skin types require.
• Advanced needs—met by incorporating
additional regimen steps, as needed, to
address specific concerns. Starting in our
late 20s our advanced needs steadily increase.
Together, basic needs and advanced needs
form the essential needs of the skin.

Basic Needs
Although the skin has ten essential needs for optimal health
and beauty, meeting the minimum basic, daily needs with four
regimen steps creates the foundation of daily skin care.
CLEANSE
TONE
PROTECT DAY
HYDRATE NIGHT
Basic Daily Need: Cleanse
The cleanse step meets the skin’s basic need to be free of excess oil, dirt,
and pollutants. If these impurities are not removed, they can have the
following negative effects:
• Dull or oily appearance to the skin.
• Clogged, inflamed pores that may lead
to the development of more pimples.
Cleansing should be performed twice daily with a
minimal amount of mild cleanser. Avoid using harsh
cleansers.
Basic Daily Need: Tone
The tone step fulfills a basic daily need by
preparing the skin to receive the benefits
from other products. Toning works in several
ways.
• Calms and soothes the skin.
• Minimizes the appearance of pores.
• Balances the skin’s pH.
Toning should be performed twice daily,
after cleansing.
Basic Daily Need: Protect (Day)
The protect step meets the skin’s basic
need for a morning moisturizer with SPF
to guard against harmful UV rays and
environmental stressors.
Sun damage degrades the moisture
barrier and structural proteins as well as
promotes discoloration—all signs of premature skin aging.
Protective moisture should be applied each morning
and reapplied as needed.
Basic Daily Need: Hydrate (Night)
The hydrate step provides vital
lipids, replenishing moisture, and key
repair components for optimal
nighttime recovery.
Nighttime hydration should be applied once
daily in the evening.
Advanced Needs
In addition to the basic daily needs, the skin
also has advanced needs.
When specific skin concerns exist, such as
discoloration, acne, free radical damage,
and aging, addressing these concerns is
critical for skin health and beauty.
Incorporating regimen steps to target the
skin’s advanced needs gives your skin the
needed advantage of advanced skin
care.
Advanced Needs of the Skin
NOURISH
EXFOLIATE
TREAT
MASK
REFINISH
REVITALIZE
Advanced Need: Nourish
For protecting skin health and
maintaining youthfulness, the nourish
step is essential.
Nurture the skin with powerful
antioxidants to neutralize free radicals
that damage and prematurely age the
skin.
The advanced need “nourish” should be met
twice daily, after toning.
Advanced Need: Treat
The treat step meets an essential
advanced need of the skin when key
components, functions, or structures
within the skin are compromised, leading
to signs of premature aging.
Treatment products are specially
formulated to target those key skin
components.
The advanced need “treat” should be met
twice daily, after toning and prior to the
nourish step.
Advanced Need: Refinish
The refinish step focuses on skin
that has become dull and rough.
Refinishing helps to resurface and
polish the skin for a fresh, glowing
complexion.
The advanced need “refinish” should be met
twice weekly (three times the first week), after
cleansing.
Advanced Need: Exfoliate
When environmental stressors and
intrinsic aging begin to interfere with
healthy cell renewal, the exfoliate step
may become essential.
Exfoliation helps remove dead cell buildup for smoother, more youthful looking
skin.
The advanced need “exfoliate” should be
met 1–2 times per week, after cleansing.
Advanced Need: Mask
The mask step meets an essential advanced
need of the skin when the skin requires a
concentrated application of key ingredients for
an extended period of time.
Masks are an excellent way to meet the skin’s
various needs:
• Some masks deliver key ingredients to the skin.
• Other masks draw out impurities.
The advanced need “mask” should be met
1–2 times per week, after cleansing.
Advanced Need: Revitalize
Fatigue and stress can make the skin
appear dull and lifeless. The essential
step revitalize helps restore vibrancy
by increasing circulation to the skin.
The advanced need “revitalize” should be
met once per week, after cleansing.
Determining Your Skin’s Essential Needs
There are several ways to determine your skin’s essential needs,
ranging from personal perception to professional analysis.
The key to optimal skin health and beauty is to meet your skin’s basic
needs with a comprehensive skin care system. Once your skin’s
basic needs are met, it’s important to meet your individual advanced
needs by incorporating specific regimen steps and specially
formulated products into your daily routine.
* The best skin care systems will meet all basic needs and one or more
advanced needs.
Regimen Rules
When meeting your skin’s basic and
advanced needs with a daily
regimen, it is important to follow
correct usage, order, and
instructions to ensure the best
results from each product.
Morning Regimen
1) Cleanse
2) Refinish, Exfoliate, Mask, or
Revitalize (1–2 times per week)
3) Tone
4) Treat
5) Nourish
6) Protect
Night Regimen
1) Cleanse
2) Refinish, Exfoliate, Mask, or
Revitalize (1–2 times per week)
3) Tone

Usage Tips
• The advanced steps refinish, exfoliate, mask, or revitalize can be
performed either morning or evening, but not twice in one day.
• It is not recommended to perform the refinish, exfoliate, or mask steps
on the same day; or to perform more than 3–4 total steps per week.
• When applying more than one treatment product, apply serums first
then gels.
• Apply day lotions after treatment products have dried.
