National Pathology Programme Board
(NPPB)
The Welsh Labour Manifesto makes direct
reference to Pathology, stating that Health
Boards will be required to continue to work
collaboratively to modernise Pathology
services. National Pathology Programme
Board Progress Reports to the NHS Wales
Chief Executives’ Group will therefore also
inform progress reports against delivery of
the manifesto. The full NPPB 2011/12
work programme and meeting papers are
available at http://howis.wales.nhs.uk/pmuw
During 2012 / 2013, the NPPB will meet on:
Friday 20th April 2012
Friday 13th July 2012
Friday 12th October 2012
Friday 11th January 2013
A number of very active All Wales groups
continue to meet, benefitting from one
another’s expertise and experience and
developing shared resources to reduce
duplication of effort. These include the
Pathology Laboratory Managers, Quality
Managers, POCT Coordinators, HTA
Designated Individuals and Clinical Strategy
Group supporting LIMS harmonisation.
Shared resources can be found in the
Pathology Commuinty web pages at
www.nliah.com/portal
Laboratory Information Management
System (LIMS)
Configuration and User Acceptance Testing of
the All Wales LIMS is well advanced with
NWIS, Intersystems, the suppliers of Trak
Care Lab, and Pathology colleagues working
in close partnership. The new LIMS,
implementation, which commences with
1st March 2012
Ysbyty Wrexham Maelor during March, provides
exciting opportunities and scope to integrate
services and do things in new ways for the
benefit of patients throughout Wales.
Please take every opportunity to participate in
your local LIMS readiness project and help
shape the future Pathology service in your
organisation. The LIMS Implementation Board
meets next on Thursday 8th March 2012.
Further information on the LIMS project and
Wales’ Pathology Handbook is available at

Regional Pathology Collaborative Groups
A number of projects mandated by regional
Chief Executives’ groups are currently being
undertaken by the Regional Pathology
Collaborative Groups in South East, South West
and North Wales led by the Clinical Directors
and Directorate Managers of Health Boards and
national services. The major driver for these is
NHS Wales’ commitment to deliver high quality,
equitable, sustainable Pathology services
attracting and retaining excellent staff
throughout Wales.
Further information on the National Pathology
Programme and the work being undertaken by
the various All Wales and regional groups is
obtainable from Margie Fielden, Programme
Manager, at [email protected]
