1964, ten college presidents formed the
Union for Research and Experimentation
in Higher Education
 The goal of the consortium was to provide
college education alternatives for working
adults.
 Between 1964 and 1976, the idea of
alternative adult education evolved into the
Union Institute

the Mid-1970s, the consortium
dissolved in favor the Union Institute.
 In 2001, the university changed its name
to Union Institute & University to better
describe its status as a degree granting
postsecondary educational institution.
