Media can be a Destructive Tool
• Media can be a Destructive Tool, for
different reasons:
– Exposing us to bad scenes and
violence, which destroy the purity of
the mind and heart.
– Bombarding the hearing with dirty
language.
– Justification of sins as the norms of
the society, e.g. acceptance of
dating, abortion, etc.
Media can be a Destructive Tool (cont.)
– Wasting valuable time of our life
in non-constructive activity, e.g.
talk shows, video games,
browsing the Internet without an
aim or for immoral websites.
– Pre-occupation with celebrities,
e.g. actors and singers.
– Many songs may encourage the
youth to stay away from religion
and God, e.g. rap music.
What is Sin?
• St. Paul said: Your body is the Temple of the
Holy Spirit. Your bodies are the Members of
Christ, shall I take the members of Christ
and make them the members of an harlot?
God Forbid.
• It is destructive slavery, sinners do not
understand the proper meaning of life .
• It is sin that makes us lose peace.
• Sin makes your soul sad and disturbed.
• The sinner is a lost person, whether he was
lost by his will or ignorance or by someone
else.
• The sinner understands freedom and
enjoyment in a wrong way.
Avoid the Destructive Impact of the
Media and the Internet
• Fill your free time with God and His
word.
• Watch how much time are you
spending with God and how much
are you spending in front of the TV or
the Internet. David the king admits
clearly that our lives are short so do
not delay your meetings with the
Lord (Psalms 89:47).
Media as a Constructive Tool in Our Lives
• Watching Christian movies and religious
messages is very helpful spiritually. We
can take the example of some good
characters, e.g. our saints.
• Watching educational channels ( e.g.
History channel and discovery channel
and be aware of events around the world
(e.g. News channel).
• The Internet can be a source of very
good Christian and educational
information.
Father Youstos El Anthony
• We have to realize that every minute of our lives count towards our
eternal life. Father Youstos El Anthony was known for frequently
asking the question “What is the time?” to remind himself that he is
continually getting closer to the last minute in his life and reminding
others around him. This will make us appreciate the value of time and
help us minimize the time wasted in front of the TV or on the Internet.
• So we have to manage our time wisely “redeeming the time, because
the days are evil. Therefore, do not be unwise, but understand what
the will of the Lord is” (Ephesians 5:16-17).
• We must be selective for what is beneficial to our spiritual and mental
growth and what is wasteful and unfruitful (1 Corinthians 6:12).
• Guard your senses of what they receive and protect your heart, soul
and mind of the small offenses that gradually build up to ruin our
purity.
The Characteristics of a Chaste Youth
1. Successful youth:
“The lord was with Joseph, and he was a
successful man”. The chaste youth is
successful.
2. Courageous Youth:
“The wicked flee when no one pursues, but
the righteous are bold as a lion”. A chaste
youth fears the Lord but nothing else.
3. Fruitful Youth:
The deviant soul is barren and without fruit.
The pure soul is productive and effective and
has visible influence on others, contributing
to their salvation.
Conclusion
• TV and the Internet have a strong
impact on our lives, thoughts, and
behavior. Therefore we have to
watch very carefully and be alert to
their impact in our life and our
spiritual growth.
• Limit the time you spend in front of
the TV as a practice for this week
and try to make this a habit.
• Be selective in what you expose
your senses to.
