Who is going?

There are three different groups involved in this trip.

A group of about 23 from Upstate New York A group of 12 from Massachusetts and the 9 of us. We are Eleanor Broadbent Grace Brennan Jason Hsueh Melanie Gonzalez Ross Bernstein And Mr. Hayes Ling-Ling Zhang Rebecca Lopez Sabina Slade

Leaving

We are leaving from JFK, Saturday, February 13 at 4:50 on Air France 23 to Paris We will meet at the Air France check-in desk at 2 p.m.

We will change in Paris (3 hour layover) to AF 2178 to Naples. We are scheduled to arrive at 11:50 a.m. A bus will take us to Sorrento and the actual itinerary kicks in the next day.

Returning

We abandon Rome on Sunday, February 21 at 7:20 on Air France 2305. We will transfer again in Paris to AF Flight 6.

We should arrive at JFK at 3:45--although you all know that deplaning, customs, and immigration may take a good hour.

I am assuming that everyone has arranged for transportation to and from the airport.

Baggage

While there will be people helping in the hotel, you will have to do some schlepping with your bags so don’t bring something large of heavy. 20” by 28” is the airline rule.

Present airport concerns mean that we will be limited to one carry-on, and that’s it. All liquids should be in your checked luggage.

Packing

NETC has given you some suggestions. The weather in Italy at this time could be in the 60’s or the 30’s. It could be sunny or rainy.

You should bring clothes for layering, so that you don’t need different outfits for different temperatures.

Shoes are for walking, lots of walking. Bring solid (but not brand new) shoes. Sneakers are fine.

A tightly telescoping umbrella wouldn’t hurt either.

Money

I need the $52 dollars for tips from each person. Likewise, I would like $48 “on deposit” to make sure that we have plenty of money for bus tickets or extra entrance fees. So $100 as soon as possible.

This is more that I suggested previously, but with the final info from NETC, we may have more time to do things—but that costs money. Make check out to Thomas Hayes You don’t want to sit in the hotel room in Rome because you didn’t have money for the subway. I’ll refund whatever we don’t spend.

Electronics

If you are bringing electric appliances (including battery chargers for phones or cameras) you need to get a converter. They are available at Ace Hardware, Radio Shack and all the electronics stores. Make sure you get the adapter for Italy (not all Europe is the same). The hotels should have hair-dryers.

A battery alarm clock is a very good idea, esp if you take any time in the morning to make yourself presentable.

Keep your treasure out of sight

You should have some type of inner wallet or one on a cord that you can tuck inside your clothes. A money belt would be fine as well.

Lots of tourists means lots of thieves.

Hotel arrangements

We never know until we get there how many beds are in each room. It may well be that the ladies will split up 3 and 3, although it is possible that at some point, there would be 4 in one room and 2 in another with someone from another group.

The gentlemen will most probably be sharing with at least one other—but we will only know once we arrive.

Passport back-up.

Bring a copy of the front pages of your passport, a copy of your birth certificate if available, and if you’ve got them, 2 passport photos.

Hand all this to Mr. Hayes.

With these documents, getting a replacement passport is painless.

Emergency contact in Italy

All the hotels have an English-speaking receptionist Each of us should be listed on the hotel register, but if there is a problem: Judith Atkinson is our NETC Tour Director John Mooney is our group Leader

Health emergency

Nothing is going to happen, but in case someone breaks a leg, or needs to see a doctor, each traveler should have a copy of the family health insurance card—with the company contact phone number.

Your contact info

Please send an e-mail to Mr. Hayes at [email protected]

with every telephone number that we might need to contact your parents. So it would be the home, the work and the cell number for all the adults responsible for you.
