INTRODUCTIONS
Who are we?

WHO WE ARE

We were set up in the 1990’s with the aim of representing
and distributing the views and concerns of Tree Officers
nationwide;

Membership is open to all local authorities in the UK and is
corporate;





We currently have 4 main directors, all full-time tree officers
in local government;
We are independent and UK-Based;
We currently have 64 members;
We are funded through membership subscriptions;
We employ a part time admin officer.

WHAT DO WE DO?






We organise a national programme of training;
We produce a quarterly members’ newsletter: ‘The Tree
Officer’;
We have representatives on important arboriculture
industry committees, working groups and project
advisory groups;
We liaise with government and other tree related
bodies;
We provide updates and reviews for our members;
We provide discounts to our members on all of our
training.

ONGOING WORK 1 – a snapshot of what we do





Arboricultural Research Initiative – NATO representative now on the steering
group. Initial aim - to 'resurrect' the arboricultural research seminars;
BS 5837 review - the 5 year review of 5837:2005 is due and will begin in
January 2010. NATO is represented on the review group, by invitation, to input
to the review process from the local government perspective. It is envisaged
that the process will take approx 12 months from start to finish;
BSI 213 Committee - Oversight committee dealing with all tree related British
Standards; 3998, 5837 etc. NATO has representation on the committee;
Arboriculture and Forestry Advisory Group (AFAG) - NATO attends regular
meetings to discuss and improve safety and health throughout the industry,
focusing on the underlying root causes of serious injury;
The Trees & Design Action Group (TDAG) - multi-disciplinary group of
individual professionals and organisations from both the private and public
sectors who have come together to collaborate in achieving an increased
awareness of the role of trees in the built environment.

AA Professional Committee – NATO represented and currently holds the
chair for this year (2010). Deals with ethics and standards across the
broad breadth of the arboricultural industry and NATO input from a local
authority perspective but also in the spirit of inter-association cooperation;
AA Board of Trustees - through NATO’s involvement in the AA
Professional Committee our representative is also a Director and Trustee
of the AA;
National Joint Utilities Group (NJUG4) – NATO was on the NJUG 10
review that resulted in the revision which is the current NJUG 4 which
offered the opportunity to have arboricultural input into the Guidelines;
Helliwell System – NATO was on the working group for the Helliwell
System review and also contributed to the final document;
AA Standard Conditions of Contract: revision – NATO assisted in the
revision of this AA product.

TRAINING 2010/11






Current Programme being developed;
Previously provided by TRA but now NATO
owned and run since start of 2009;
Presenters include Richard Nicholson, David
Rose, Jack Kenyon and Chris Neilan;
Workshops in 2010 in Manchester and London;
Aiming to offer CPD from both ICF and AA;
Offering high quality training at competitive
prices.

WORKING TOGETHER IN 2010

NATO invited by the AA to arrange the a
morning at the AA conference in Manchester
(September 2010);
Focus on local government and tree officers;
Opportunity to raise issues and share
experiences;
Working closely with the ICF on Chartered
Status for tree officers in local government
