EFFECTIVENESS OF A SELFMANAGEMENT PROGRAMME

BACKGROUND
The care of people with long term conditions consumes a large
proportion of health and social care resources
Evidence based research demonstrates that investment in selfmanagement programmes has a positive impact on the quality
of life for people with long term conditions
BACKGROUND
Previous research has shown that self-management
programmes have a positive impact on participants:
• Self efficacy
• Knowledge
• Skills
• Self-management behaviour
The Long Term Conditions project in Donegal (funded by NCNM)
supported the development of a self management programme .
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
The overall aim of the study was to measure the impact of the
Quality of Life Programme on participants’ knowledge,
attitudes and behaviour.
Objectives were to measure changes in:
• Self efficacy
• Health Care Utilisation
• General Health
• Quality of Life
Evaluate:
• Reasons for attending the programme
• Impact of the programme
METHODOLOGY
Research Design –
• Test Retest Survey Design
Instrumentation
• 17 measures guided by aims and objectives
• Standardised Instruments
• Psychometrically tested
METHODOLOGY
Intervention : Quality of Life Programme
• Based on Stanford University CDSMP Model
• 6 Sessions @ 2.5 hrs each session
Sample
• Self-referring Sample
• 41 Repeat measures respondents
• Board range of conditions
• Predominately female sample (85.4%)
• Mostly married (62.5%)
• Age range 28 - 78 years old
RESULTS
Main Reason for Attending:
• Gain information
• Develop a positive attitude
• Change lifestyle
• Manage Fatigue

Main Benefits from Attending:
• Positive attitude (70.7%)
• Eating more healthily (51.2%)
• Increased exercise (48.8%)
• Increased self confidence (46.3%)
• No longer feeling alone (46.3%)
95% of participants would recommend the programme
CONCLUSIONS
• The Quality of Life Programme had significant impact on
participants particularly noted in the areas of:
• Self-efficacy
• Health Distress
• Fatigue
• Communicate with G.P.
• Impact of the long term condition on the individual’s daily
quality of life
CONCLUSIONS
• Participants found it a very useful programme
• Participants would recommend the programme to others
living with a long term condition
RECOMMENDATIONS
• The Self-Management Programme can have a significant
impact on the individual
• The full impact on the programme should be gauged on
healthcare resources and also financially
• More in-depth analysis of the components of the programme
and how it could be developed/improved.
