helps create the Communist Party.
► Vietminh-an organization whose goal it was
to win Vietnam’s independence from foreign
rule.
► US gives close to $1 billion in aid to France,
in order to fight Ho Chi Minh and the
Vietminh.
Domino Theory
► The
French are driven out of Vietnam and
SE Asia.
► Domino Theory-if one country fell to
Communists then its neighbors would also
fall.
Dinh Diem, Vietcong, and Minh
Trail
► Ngo
Dinh Diem-South Vietnam’s president,
a strong anti-Communist, corrupt
government that suppressed opposition.
► Vietcong-Communist opposition fighters.
► Ho Chi Minh Trail-a network of paths used
by North Vietnam to transport supplies to
the Vietcong in South Vietnam.
Tonkin Gulf Resolution
► When
it seemed the South Vietnamese
government would be overthrown, the US
increased it’s involvement.
► Tonkin Gulf Resolution-adopted by
Congress in 1964, giving the president
broad powers to wage war in Vietnam.
