• Puddlejumper is a luminescent raincoat that glows in the rain. Handsilkscreened electroluminescent lamps on the front of the jacket are
wired to interior electronics and conductive water sensors on the
back and left sleeve. When water hits one of the sensors, the
corresponding lamp lights up, creating a flickering pattern of
illumination that mirrors the rhythm of rainfall.

Smart Textiles
Smart vest with integrated optical fibers and electronic wires for sensing
environmental changes such as temperature and chemicals
Smart fabrics ranging from woven and non-woven to knitted structures designed for
medical and military applications
Ski wear that is flexible but on impact the
fibres lock together and absorb the shock
• The smart material in this spacesuit will
repair itself if damaged
• This smart material will change colour to
show where stresses occur. This will help
in buildings
• Sunglasses that change colour with light
intensity
• The strip on the can lets you know when
the drink is cold enough to drink
The picture changes when hot
liquid is poured into the cup
Paint that changes colour with
temperature
A smart robot that reacts to a
human
Robots that react to their
environment
Robotic heads and react to your
facial expression
This smart material bends when an
electric current is passed through it
• This car has a photochromic roof that
darkens when the sun becomes more
intense. (Mrs. Forward has one of these)
Smart plastic that changes shape
when an electric current is passed
through it
Glass that becomes opaque when
an electric current passes through
it
Materials that absorb sunlight and
glow in the dark
As the cup is filled with hot water
the logo shows up
In UV light the design changes
colour
As the kettle becomes hotter the
colour appears
Smart glass allowing privacy in the
loo.
This photochromic lens changes for
day and night
This smart vest monitors your heart
rate, temperature etc and will alarm
people if there is a medical problem
