Integrated Logistics Environment
Kickoff Meeting
NPDI Project & SCIM Summary & Status
Presented by:
Rick Lobsitz (NGTS)
1
NPDI & SCIM

NPDI (Navy Product Data Initiative)
– To specify the requirements for and drive the implementation of
product data systems based on an open architecture having
suitable functionality and enterprise-wide interoperability to
support affordable Navy ship design, construction and service life
support
– Initial version of the IPDE Specification provided to the Navy
represents the naval shipbuilders’ best efforts to build consensus
among the various shipyards

SCIM (Ship Common Information Model)
– Core data model for NPDI IPDE Specification
– Separate document from the IPDE Specification being produced by
the NPDI Project, but is referenced by that IPDE Specification
– SCIM codifies the models developed and prototyped by the ISE
Project under NSRP over the past nine years

Initial validation work from
2009 Panel Project

Purpose
– To determine the feasibility of using existing AP214 translators with
NPDI SCIM schema to improve the exchange of early and detail
design data, and perform an initial validation of the SCIM

Scope
–
–


Develop linkage between AP 214 and SCIM file

Lessons Learned






Technical approach which links AP 214 geometry and SCIM
ship design data is viable for CAD translators which
generate XML attribute file
SCIM schemas were sufficiently defined for NPDI
specification, but additional work was required for
translator usage
SCIM model is missing STEP geometry definitions
Determined use of SCIM still requires access to ISO STEP
documentation
STEP expertise required to implement SCIM schema
STEP geometry viewer required to hand populate SCIM
files

Panel Project
Recommendations
 Incorporate external reference mechanism into SCIM
 Include documentation for STEP geometry model with the
SCIM
 Define mandatory attributes in SCIM documentation
 Validate SCIM schema against STEP schema to identify
any missing attributes or relationships
 Provide a SCIM User’s Guide with examples
 Include fully expanded XML schemas with SCIM
documents
 Reference required ISO STEP documentation where
required
