Opinions about eating
Peter’s main opinion:
He thinks tasty food is usually bad for
people. But he loves eating burnt food.
Laura’s main opinion:
She is a vegetarian. She eats food that
is healthy.
Tony’s main opinion:
He thinks having a balanced diet is
important, but he prefers to eat food
that he likes.
How important is keeping healthy to you?
A group of young people got together to
discuss this question. Here’s part of
their discussion.
PETER: I’d like to stay healthy, but to be
honest, I only eat food that tastes good.
And if food tastes good, it’s usually bad
for you, isn’t it? Cola tastes better than
water, for example.
KIM: Well, food that is bad for you can
taste good! But I prefer not to eat too
much food that is fried, like, er, French
fries. Do you eat fast food, Laura?
LAURA: Do I eat fast food? Never!I love
to eat food that is healthy. I want to take
care of my health, so I eat mainly fruit
and vegetables. Oh!And I stay away
from sugar, you do too, don’t you?
KIM: Hm, yes. I’d stay away from cola
and sweet desserts if I were you. And I
think most people are in agreement that
fruit and vegetables are good for health.
But, um, I would say that fast food itself
isn’t always bad for you, but too much of
it is not good.
LAURA: Actually, don’t you know that it’s
been found in laboratory testing that
some types of oil are really bad for us?
So I don’t eat anything that’s been
cooked in oil. Also, did you know that
some foods might cause cancer? Like
burnt barbecued meat. I’ve heard eating
burnt food like this can increase the risk
of cancer.
KIM: Well, I agree it’s good to eat lots of
fruit and vegetables, but I think it’s also
fine to eat some meat or fish. People
who eat a balanced diet should be
healthier than those who only eat
biscuits and hamburgers, shouldn’t they?
I prefer to only eat food that I like, but
isn’t it important to eat food that’s
healthy, even if you don’t like it? The
main thing is to have a good balance.

The kinds of friends you like.
Friends play a very important role

I like friends who love sports

I don’t prefer friends who are…
Level Two:
It is such comforting companions that
I wish to keep.
One bright hour with their kind is worth
more to me than the lifetime services of a
psychologist,
who will only fill up the healing silence
necessary to those darkest moments
when in which I would rather be my own best
friend.
Give a report on what kinds of friends
you prefer.
Friends play an important part in our
life. We prefer friends who are
easygoing and generous. And we also
like friends who love sports because
we’re very good at sports. We don’t
prefer friends who are shy or selfish.
We like friends who we can tell our
worries too, because we need help
sometimes. We hope that we can make
more friends.
Task 2. The school
uniforms you like.
In Unit 3, we talked about the kind
of clothes we wear. Most of the
classmates think we should be
allowed to design our own school
uniforms. Can you tell me what kind
of school uniform do you prefer?
e.g.
original, not ugly, out of style
I can’t stand clothes that are…
I don’t prefer clothes that are…
I prefer school uniforms that are…
Write a small article about what
kinds of school uniforms you
prefer.
e.g.
I don’t like our uniforms at all
because they are ugly. I can’t stand
clothes that are ugly and out of style. I
prefer clothes that are unusual. And I don’t
prefer clothes that are not comfortable; I
don’t like clothes that are too expensive,
either. If I can design our own uniforms, I
will design clothes that are fashionable
and comfortable…
Task 3. All about music.
pop, dance, Latin, rock & roll,
classical, rap, country, folk,
new age, light…
List as many phrases as you can to
describe the kind of music:
quiet, loud, gentle, energetic, slow, fast,
exciting, crazy, not noisy, not too loud,
can dance to, can sing along with, has
great lyrics, can make me cry…
List as many phrases as you can to
describe the kind of musicians:
can write their own songs, can play
different kinds of music, can make us
happy, can play original music…
Interview your partner about his
favorite music and musician.
What kind of music do you like?
What kind of music you don’t like.
What kind of singer or musician do
you prefer / don’t like?
Take our your favorite CD, and
introduce your favorite CD to your
partner. Take notes and make a CD
review.
What kind of music is it?
What’s the name of your favorite CD?
Why do you like this CD?
Why is it so special to you?
What do you dislike about this CD?
What does it remind you of?
When I am stressed out, I always listen
to music to relax myself. I like music that
is quiet and gentle. So, my favorite music
is country. This music is great because it
has great lyrics. I don’t like music that is
too loud. I can’t stand rap music. I prefer
musicians who can write their original
lyrics. I like singers who can sing the
words clearly. My favorite singer is John
Denver. You can listen to his music at
night with your bedroom light on. He is
terrific, I think. The music reminds me of
peaceful life.
