Wife carrying
The wife carrying competition is
very popular in Finland, though
it doesn’t actually have to be
your wife. And the winner gets
the woman's weight in beer.
Several types of carry may be
practised: piggyback, fireman's
carry (over the shoulder), or
Estonian-style (the wife hangs
upside-down with her legs
around
the
husband's
shoulders, holding onto his
waist).
Athletics and Ice Hockey
• The sport of athletics has historically been an important part of
both Finnish sports history and national identity. Javelin throw is
the only event in which Finland has enjoyed success all the way
from the 1900s to this day. Thus, it is currently the most popular
athletics event in Finland.
• Ice hockey is the most popular sport in Finland. It's top professional
league, the SM-Liiga, is among the strongest in the world. The
Finnish national team has won the World Championship twice, in
1995 and 2011.
