Reading Acts 1:1-11 1 In the first book, O Theophilus, I have dealt with all that Jesus began to do and teach, 2 until the day when he was taken up, after he had given commands through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. 3 To them he presented himself alive after his suffering by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God. 4 And while staying with them he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, "you heard from me; Slide 1 Reading Acts 1:1-11 5 for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now." 6 So when they had come together, they asked him, "Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?" 7 He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” Slide 2 Reading Acts 1:1-11 9 And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. 10 And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, 11 and said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven." ESV Slide 3 Luke 24:50-51 Acts 1:9-10 The Ascension Slide 4 Luke 24:50-51 Acts 1:9-10 Slide 5 John says we are to; 1 John 2:28 … Live deeply in Christ. Then we'll be ready for him when he appears, ready to receive him with open arms, with no cause for red-faced guilt or lame excuses when he arrives. (MsgB) Slide 6 Jesus said… Luke 11:23 Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters. ESV Slide 7 The Holy Spirit through Paul describes what Jesus was doing by dying. He was… Colossians 2:14 … Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross; Slide 8 The Holy Spirit tells us that; 2 Corinthians 5:21 For our sake he [God] made him [Jeus] to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. ESV Slide 9 Through John the Holy Spirit says; 1 John 1:6-7 6 If we claim that we experience a shared life with him and continue to stumble around in the dark, we're obviously lying through our teeth — we're not living what we claim. 7 But if we walk in the light, God himself being the light, we also experience a shared life with one another, as the sacrificed blood of Jesus, God's Son, purges all our sin. (MsgB) Slide 10 In his second letter John says that others ought to be able to see the light of God by how we live our lives. And then he says anyone who… 1 John 2:10 … dwells in God's light …doesn't block the light from others. (MsgB) Slide 11 When Jesus gave us a model prayer, what we call The Lord’s Prayer, right at the end of that prayer instructs us to petition with these powerful words; Luke 11:4 And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. KJV That is a prayer that Jesus will always answer. Slide 12 When the Holy Spirit was dealing with the church at Corinth about accommodating the practice of idolatry He says to them (and us), 2 Corinthians 6:14-16 How can you make a partnership out of right and wrong? That's not partnership; that's war. Is light best friends with dark? 15 Does Christ go strolling with the Devil? Do trust and mistrust hold hands? 16 Who would think of setting up pagan idols in God's holy Temple? But that is exactly what we are, each of us a temple in whom God [is supposed to rule and reign]. (Paraphrased) Slide 13 Once again through Paul the Holy Spirit warns of the dangers of becoming;. 2 Timothy 3:4-6 …lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, 5 having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people. ESV Lovers of pleasures ...means worshippers of things that gratify the flesh and move us away from simple and loving and instant obedience to God. Slide 14 Again the Holy Spirit says to us; 1 Thessalonians 5:19 Do not quench the Spirit. 20 Do not despise prophecies, 21 but test everything; hold fast what is good. 22 Abstain from every form of evil. ESV Or as Peterson puts it; 22 Throw out anything tainted with evil. (MsgB) Slide 15 It is time to grow up, to allow the Holy Spirit to produce in you the full stature of Jesus so that you may influence the lives of others and move them to follow Jesus. Peterson has Luke 11:23 saying; Luke 11:23 This is war, and there is no neutral ground. If you're not on my side, you're the enemy; if you're not helping, you're making things worse. (MsgB) Slide 16 Jesus says He is able to Hebrews 7:25 … save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them. ESV Slide 17 Jesus is not against us. He is for us. Paul, by the Holy Spirit, instructs us about how to come to the communion table. He writes saying; 1 Corinthians 11:23-32 For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, "This is my body which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me." 25 In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” Slide 18 1 Corinthians 11:23-32 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes. 27 Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of profaning the body and blood of the Lord. 28 Let a person examine himself, then, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. 29 For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment on himself. Slide 19 30 That is why many of you are weak and ill, and some have died. 31 But if we judged ourselves truly, we would not be judged. 32 But when we are judged by the Lord, we are disciplined so that we may not be condemned along with the world.
