2014 Michigan Merit Exam MME and ACT ACT Exam WorkKeys Michigan Math, Science, and Social Studies

American College Test (ACT) www.actstudent.org

 Consists of four sections – English, Math, Reading and Science and an optional Writing section  A score of 22 is considered an average score for college admissions  ACT scores are used to determine State of Michigan Scholarships (must be taken by December of senior year).

Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) www.college

 Critical Reading, Math and Writing sections  Scores can range from 200-800 per section  Mean/average score is 500 on each section  A combined score of 1500 (out of 2400) is considered average for college  Add zero to end of scores on PSAT to compare with future potential SAT scores   This test is preferred by the highly selective and eastern schools Be sure to also register for the SAT II’s per the requirements of the universities you are interested in.

Senior Schedules  Schedule should be challenging but balanced—not too easy and not too difficult!

Drop one class at LCHS for each class taken at Macomb Community College Must take PLAN, PSAT, or MME/ACT Must pass area related to college class Student must have all credits and be in good academic standing Must be an academic class not offered At LCHS

 Apply spring of junior year or fall of senior year, if seriously interested in playing college sports.

College Timeline Spring of Junior Year: Take ACT/MME Research out-of-state schools to see if SAT is required -Research and visit colleges Work hard – Grades are most important in 10 th and 11 th grades!

College Applications  Spring/Summer 2014 – Research colleges online – Attend College Fairs – Visit top choices – Write essays for required schools (MSU and U of M) – Begin Applications – Online is preferred with many colleges Note: Applications are not submitted until the fall of the senior year. Please refer to College Application Process handout.

Campus Visits  Schedule a tour of the department/program of interest  Sit in on a class or tour while classes are in session  Eat in the dining halls  Check out the student activity facilities

Senioritis/Anxiety     Colleges look at senior grades--may rescind admissions offers if performance declines Anxiety is expected— keep talking and helping your senior to problem solve—give them lots of encouragement Recognize the difference between anxiety and severe depression Let them know that nothing is permanent— there is always the freedom to change plans
