The life of Samuel de Champlain
• Born in Brouage, France around 1567
• Died from a stroke in 1635 on Christmas
• He was a French explorer
• He was in the army and became a
quartermaster of cavalry
Why?
• On his first expedition, Champlain went to

make an accurate map of Hudson Bay to
the Great Lakes in 1603
In 1604, Champlain sailed to North America
again, he was looking for a place where the
French could have a permanent settlement.
He remained there for three years

• On his third trip in 1608, Champlain founded the

city of Quebec along the St. Lawrence River
Quebec is one of the oldest cities in Canada

• Champlain first meet the Algonquin
Indians along the St. Lawrence River on
his first expedition and they became allies

• When Champlain returned, the
Algonquians were preparing for battle
against the Iroquois, Champlain decided
to help

• It is said that once Champlain shot his
gun, he killed two Iroquois leaders and
the others were so scared they fled
