Course Selections
• LMS counselors will visit elementary campuses & explain “Course Selection
Forms” to 6th grade students.
• Elder - Thursday, 9am February 5th
• Plum -Thursday, 1:30pm February 5th
• North Joshua – Friday, 10:30am February 6th
• Staples – Monday, 9am February 9th
• Caddo - Monday, 1:30pm February 9th
• If your child is absent the day LMS counselors visit, the elementary counselor will
have extra copies of “Course Selection Forms” in their office.
• All “Course Selection Forms” are due to the child’s 6th grade teacher by Friday
February 13th.

“Participating in the athletic program is a privilege and we encourage all to participate.
However, if during the participation of athletics a student chooses not to follow the JISD
Athletic Code of Conduct or prohibits instruction to other participants, that student may be

Gifted & Talented
• Students qualifying for GT services are served in an Honors
classroom at LMS.
• Honors English

• Students do not go to the GT center at the secondary level.
• 6th grade students will be retested in the spring of the current
school year (after STAAR testing), to determine if students are
eligible for GT supports/services.
Honors Course Criteria
• A gifted and talented student who rescreens and qualifies at the
end of his/her 6th grade year is eligible for first-time entry for
honors courses at LMS Honors classes are specific to the
student’s qualifying area.

The Gifted and Talented Center will send the list of
students who quality for Honors Math, Honors Science,
and Honors English based upon the JISD Gifted and
Talented Criteria.
2. Students who qualify in areas that are not content specific
such as creativity or reasoning must also meet criteria in
Section II.
Honors Courses
• First Time Entry for Honors
(Automatic Qualification) :
• The student earns a grade of 90+ yearly
average in the previous on-level class in the
same subject; and
• The student earns a Level III – Advanced
Academic Performance on the STAAR
Reading or Math test
• The student has parent permission to enroll
in honors classes

Honors ELA
• Curriculum is more rigorous than a regular 6th
grade ELA class
• If a student scores below an 80% (for any six
weeks grading period), he/she will be placed
on probation. If the student shows minimal to
no improvement by the end of the following
grading period, a teacher or parent may
initiate removal.
• A contract must be signed by the student &
parent the first week of school.
• Summer novel reading is required prior to first
day of school.
Honors Courses
Honors Math & Science Curriculum is more strenuous
than regular math/science courses.

New Graduation Plan
for Freshman & Beyond
• House Bill 5 made substantial changes to the state's
graduation requirements, moving from the current "4x4"
graduation plans to a 22-credit Foundation High School
Program.
• The Commissioner has adopted a transition plan to
replace the current graduation plans with the Foundation
High School Program beginning with the 2014-2015
school year.

 Curriculum requirements for at least one endorsement

 All students entering ninth grade are required to indicate an
endorsement in writing on a Personal Graduation Plan
 A student must earn distinguished level of achievement to be
eligible for top 10% automatic admission
