Hot spring
• A pool underground
that is heated by a
body of magma.
Extinct
• Volcano that is
unlikely to erupt
again.
Geyser
• Hot water comes from
the ground and shoots
into the sky over and
over again.
Geothermal Energy
• Heat energy in Earth’s
interior heated by
magma.
Pyroclastic flow
• The explosion of ash,
cinders,bombs,and
gases during a
eruption.
Pahoehoe
• A hot,fast moving type
of lava that hardens
smoothly.
Aa
• A slow moving type of
lava that hardens
roughly; cooler than
pahoehoe.
Active
• A volcano that has
erupt or shows signs
of erupting in the near
future.
Dormant
• A volcano that doesn’t
show signs of erupting
in the near future.
Types of Volcanic Eruptions
• The silica content of magma helps tell if the
eruptions by volcano is going to be quit or
explosive.
Stages of a Volcano
• The activity of a volcano may last from less
to more than 10 million years.
• Usually long lived volcanoes do not erupt
continuously.
Other Types of Volcanic Activity
• Hot springs and geysers are two types of
volcanic activity, but don’t have eruptions
of lava.
• These features appear anywhere on a
volcano even on extinct.
Monitoring Volcanoes
• Changes in and around a volcano usually
give a warning a short time before the
volcano erupts.
Volcano Hazards
• The time between volcanic eruptions may
span hundreds of years.
• So people living near a dormant volcano
may be unaware of the danger.
Quiet eruptions and explosive eruptions
cause far damage from crater’s rim.
Quiet eruptions lava flows from vents, and
burning everything in its past.
We Learned…
• That there is two types of lava flow,
Pahoehoe and aa. Pahoehoe is a fast moving
type and aa is a slow type.
A Dormant volcano is a volcano that is not
likely to erupt again.
• The crater usually gets deformed after it
erupts.
Grade Rubric

names, and includes a complete date.
• Topic slides are well thought out, informative,
full of details, and demonstrate a deep
understanding of the subject.
• Presentation is very creative, animated, and
uses many of the formatting techniques
learned in class.
