1. In small groups:

locate: Ipswich, Harwich, London Docklands &
Stratford & Lee Valley in London.
B. Look at the photos of the presentation.
C. Match the photos and their descriptions.
D. Talk and try to guess the meaning of
redevelopment, refurbishment, renewed, derelict.
Check your answers, using the Internet or asking
your teacher.
E. Discuss and select the five mean reasons to
redevelop each of these areas (e.g. lack of space,
business opportunities, heritage protection…)
ACTIVITIES
2. Individual tasks:
A. Decide which of the four areas is the best
location for each of the below mentioned
businesses and give reasons for your answers:
- a fast food restaurant (like McDonalds)
- a high street bank (like Santander)
- a chain clothes shop (like Zara)
- a chain furniture shop (like Ikea)
- a haute-couture shop (like Chanel)
B. Compare one of the four areas with an area
that has been redeveloped near your house. You
can take some photos or surf the Internet to get
more information and give a better explanation.

This activity was developed after my attendance to a
course for Geography Secondary Teachers in Colchester in
July 2012. I received a Comenius grant for that course.
All the photos were taken by me during the time of that
course. The programme of that course included the tour of
Ipswich Waterfront, guided by Chris, and some Field
Studies at Harwich, directed by John Morley, Geography
Teacher. Out of programme, I also joined one walking tour
of the Olympic area & Lee Valley and another of the
London Docklands, both of them guided by London Blue
Badge guides. Thanks to all of them, but any remaining
errors are mine.
