WOMEN OF ALL CLASSES WERE REGARDED AS INFERIOR TO MEN, WERE
UNDEREDUCATED, HAD LIMITED VOCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES, WERE SUBJECT TO A STRICT CODE OF SEXUAL BEHAVIOR, AND HAD ALMOST NO LEGAL
RIGHTS.
