Internet Safety
A Revision of staying
safe on the Internet

Search Engines
Do enable the safe search facility
Do use the Advanced Search facility to find information quickly
and efficiently
Do choose a search engine you like
Do Not deliberately search for inappropriate information or
images (remember: some search engines actually record what you
search for and most computers do too!)
Do remember that not all Internet information is reliable.
Remember to check your sources with other sites, or even a book!
Do remember Copyright Law. You must say where you found
your information, if you want to use it in your work.

E-mail
Do treat an email conversation like a face-to-face conversation
Do Not write anything you would not say to your recipient’s face
Do Not send spam or hoax emails
Do Not give out personal information: if you know the person
well enough for them to know this information, they will already
know it, or you can tell them next time you see them.
In school, always use your St-Hugh’s email; not your home
account

Chat Rooms
In School: Chat rooms are blocked, but at home follow these Dos and Don’ts
Do chat with your friends and family
Do Not chat with people you have never met in real life
Do Not arrange to meet people you have only chatted with
Do check your Privacy or Security settings to make sure you are only visible to
people on your friends list
Do ignore and report to an adult people who you don’t know that contact you
Do remember that online chat is real—only say online what you would say to
the person’s face
Do only join reputable chat rooms, or use MSN or Yahoo Messenger
Do let your parents know who you are chatting to, if they ask, just as you
would tell them who you are meeting, or who’s house you are visiting

Personal Information
Here are 5 things about yourself that you should not allow
strangers to find out on the Internet.
Take responsibility for keeping these things safe:
1.Your full name
2.Your location (ie address, school, club)
3. Your hobbies and interests
4. Your friends’ names
And, most importantly…
5. Your Photo
