What is the relationship between the discharge at Aswan and the rainfall that occurs within the Nile Basin? (5)
The rainfall at Aswan
is so low that it will
have little or no
influence on the
discharge at Aswan.
The discharge at Aswan is low
through the first 6 months with
decreasing monthly totals
Q increases dramatically
through August, September,
October, November and
December.
Peak discharge is in September.
The rainfall in
Khartoum, Atbara
and particularly
Addis Ababa is
highest from July to
September…
As the rainfall
decreases in these
areas, so the
discharge at Atbara,
Khartoum and
therefore Aswan
decreases too
There is high rainfall
in the South
(Entebbe) with the
highest from March
– June.
This does not affect the
discharge at Aswan…the
discharge is low and decreasing
from March to June….
…this is what causes
the discharge to
increase in the Blue
Nile, in Atbara and
therefore at Aswan too
… this is because the water
will take a long time to
reach Aswan.
There are large lakes in
Entebbe, particularly Lake
Victoria, which store water
and act as natural
reservoirs, releasing it at
an even rate.
