STFC Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) Codes • SHE communication is an area the STFC needs to improve and a simple demonstration of effective safety management – e-mails alone are not enough. • This package is one of a series of STFC SHE Code – updates, revisions and launches. • Simple presentations will be available for all Codes and should be used by STFC Managers at all levels to cascade the key messages to all staff and contractors. STFC SHE Group Corporate Services Simplified format for SHE Codes • • • • To aid their communication and understanding - simple language and clear responsibilities Purpose – why the code exists Scope – where it does and does not apply Definitions – of key terms Responsibilities – set out by role – read the part applicable to you, simple language Appendices - specific to the code but include standard appendices for the training relevant to the code, and an audit checklist STFC SHE Group Corporate Services Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) Group Introduction to SHE Code 16 “Management of Biological Safety” STFC SHE Group Corporate Services Why an STFC Bio Hazard SHE Code? • STFC facilities and technologies are increasingly being applied in Biological and Medical science. • Handling and disposing of biological materials is not an area in which the STFC has widespread experience: – it is essential that Biological Material is handled correctly and in a secure environment; and – correct disposal of Biological Material has important consequences for the STFC. • This code addresses issues raised by the ‘Control of Substances Hazardous to Health’ Regulations 2002, and the ‘Genetically Modified [GM] Organisms (Contained Use)’ Regulations 2000. STFC SHE Group Corporate Services Key features • A clear organisational structure for management of Biological Safety hazards: – Establishing Biological Safety Committee (which may also function as a GM Safety Committee) • Comprehensive guidance for the management of biology laboratories and bio hazards including relevant safety training • Ensures that biological work is carried out to standards which are common to STFC research partners, such as the MRC. STFC SHE Group Corporate Services Key points • Read that part of the Code relevant to you. • If your work involves, or you plan to use, biological or genetically modified materials: – consult the Biological Safety Officer; and – establish under which Biological Safety Committee the work will be undertaken. • Ensure suitable safety assessments are in place before starting work. • Ensure such biological work is carried out in accordance with local laboratory rules. • Report all incidents or near misses involving biological materials in SHE Enterprise. STFC SHE Group Corporate Services SHE Training • A standard Appendix to each SHE code lists necessary training - competence in safety is important • Training Appendices should be used by managers and staff when considering new hazards or in general as part of Annual Performance Reviews (APRs). - see SHE Code 10 ‘Provision of SHE training’ • As each code is launched relevant training will be set up for staff. • To book this training contact your local SHE training contacts: - RAL 8288 - DL 3600 - UKATC 8325 - Swindon 2061 STFC SHE Group Corporate Services Further questions SHE Group - Graeme Finlan, DL, 3147, RAL, 6249 - Mark Roberts, DL, 3283 - Jim Wells, RAL, 6323 or Departmental Safety Contact If you have questions on the content or the format of the presentation.
