Why study in the United
States?
Advantages…

Quality

The U.S. has one of the world’s finest university
systems, with outstanding programs in virtually all
fields. U.S. degrees are recognized throughout the
world for excellence.
Advantages…

Variety


With over 3,600 universities and 600 major courses of
study, the higher education system in the U.S. has
something for everyone.
If you are looking for an institution where you can
study a particular field - no matter how unusual or
specific - you can usually find several from which to
choose in the United States
Advantages…

Flexibility

U.S. universities emphasize a broad, well-rounded
education. You will focus on a major or field of study,
but you will also take courses in languages, the
sciences, the arts, history, and mathematics.

However, you, the student, choose which courses you
want to take to meet these requirements. Colleges
and universities generally offer a wide variety of
available electives, allowing you to tailor your
coursework to fit your needs and interests.
Advantages…

Academic outlook

Student involvement is a hallmark of U.S. academic
programs. Students are trained to observe and
analyze a problem, then solve it. You will be
expected to listen to your classmates and challenge
their points of view.

You will gain confidence
and the ability to organize
and present an argument
Advantages…

Cutting-edge Technology

U.S. universities pride themselves
on being at the forefront of
technology and educational
techniques, and in making the best
possible equipment and resources
available to their students.

Even if your field does not directly
involve science or engineering, you
will become skilled in using the
latest technology to obtain and
process information.
Advantages…

Extracurricular programs

U.S. universities offer a wide range of activities outside
the classroom to match student interests, such as
internships, clubs, and social, cultural, and sports
activities.
Advantages…

Diversity

The U.S.A. is a multi-racial society that is still
absorbing new immigrants, which makes it a very
dynamic and exciting place to experience.
Advantages…

International experience & English language

Experience in an international setting is a marketable
commodity. Your long-term career prospects can be
enhanced by an experience that develops self-confidence,
independence, and cross-cultural skills – attributes in
demand by employers world-wide.

English is rapidly becoming the
.common language of the global
marketplace, and the ability to
read, write, and speak English is
another benefit of a U.S.
education
It sounds good, but what challenges
will I face?
Challenges…

Money … an education in the U.S. can be
expensive, but there are solutions available


Universities often want a
diverse student body and
may offer special aid or
scholarships to international
students.
Many universities also offer
scholarships for special
skills, such as musical
ability or sports proficiency.
Challenges…


Many other groups offer scholarships for students that
meet certain qualifications. Internet research can help
you find money for your education.
Students also have the right to work while in the U.S.,
with some restrictions.
Challenges…
BOTTOM LINE
Don’t be discouraged by the price you see on university
websites and materials. Talk to the university and look
for groups willing to sponsor foreign students. You may
find that your education will cost less than you think!!
OK, I’m convinced …
What do I do now?
Find a college or university that is right
for you …




Talk to your university advisors here in Poland about
available exchange programs.
Most colleges and universities have extensive
information on their websites. Internet research can
help you narrow down your list.
Speak with colleges and universities in the U.S. about
their academic programs and financial aid.
Visit the campus!! You can use a tourist visa to tour
colleges and universities, giving you a better idea of
what each one has to offer.
Apply for admission …


Admission forms and requirements can usually be found
on college and university websites.
American colleges and universities often look at
students as a whole person. Be sure to list community
involvement, special talents and activities on your
application.
Admissions …

IMPORTANT NOTE: The time frame for applying is
very different than in Poland. Most colleges or
universities require you to apply by January for
admission to the fall semester of that year. Transfer
students from other colleges or universities usually have
until April to apply.
Once accepted, apply for your visa!




Refusals rates for Polish students applying to attend a
college or university are very low
Applicants must present an acceptance form from the
university and proof that they can pay the expenses.
All applicants must also show that they intend to return
to Poland after their studies.

Go to the U.S., complete your education
and obtain valuable work experience!

International students in a degree program (i.e. studying
at a college or university) have the opportunity to stay
for one year after graduation and work in a field related
to their study.

It is a great opportunity to gain
valuable experience and develop
a network of professional
contacts in the international
marketplace.
Where can I find more information?
