Leading Self: Put First Things First
Review:
Be Proactive (I am the programmer)
Begin with the End in Mind (Write the program)
Put First Things First
(RUN the program)
That is, once you create it mentally, do it for real!
The “second creation” is about turning your dreams
into reality
Consider
“Things which matter most must
never be at the mercy of things
which matter least.”
Goethe
A Paradigm:
• Mission statements always reveal what is
most important to most people – the
RELATIONSHIPS in their personal &
professional lives
• The enemy of putting first things first is
to put second or third things ahead of
them.
“Let us not make perfection the enemy of
the essential.”
How the Life Management Paradigm
Applies To Leadership
• Leadership resides in RELATIONSHIPS
with subordinates, peers, bosses, and
other stakeholders
– Time and People
– Efficiency and Effectiveness
• Focusing only on efficient use of time
will put important relationships at risk
Efficiency vs. Effectiveness
(a sucker’s choice)
• How do you produce good work?
Time Management ….. Schedules …. Efficiency
• How do you spend your life?
Life Management ….. Principles ….. Effectiveness

Life Paradigm
When dealing with people &
relationships, fast is slow
and slow is fast!
Why?
Key Distinction: Urgent vs. Important
URGENT
Activities that demand or
“appear” to require your
immediate attention
IMPORTANT Activities that are related
directly to your mission,
core values, & principles
What if we created a matrix of these two?

Often feel put upon,
stressed, frustrated, angry,

as much as possible
Bumper Sticker:
• You need a burning “YES” to say
NO to other things!
• What creates the burning YES that
enables successful leaders to say
NO to trivial requests for their
time, energy & resources?
An Exercise:
Rocks & Buckets
Planning: Life Management
• Connect with your MISSION regularly
• Put the BIG ROCKS in first (integrity
in the moments of choice)
• Identify the important ROLES in your
life (relationships)
• Select realistic GOALS for each role
• Plan WEEKLY, not Daily
• EVALUATE often how it is going
In the past 6 months, have you
really wanted to
… make some new friends
… take up a new sport
… learn a new dance
… study a new language
… get a new job
… take up a new hobby
… join a new club or organization
But …
You are just too bussssy!!
