WUCWO WORKS TO:
• Promote the international dimension in our
member organizations
• Bring the voice of our member organizations
to international bodies, focusing on the
Resolutions voted at the WUCWO General
Assembly
But how does WUCWO bring our voice to
international bodies?
THROUGH NGO STATUS
WUCWO holds NGO (non-governmental
organization) status with international bodies
such as United Nations (UN) agencies.
WUCWO has been active with the United
Nations since the UN was founded in 1945.
WHAT CAN AN NGO DO?
•
•
•
•
•
Act in consultative status
Provide expert analysis on issues
Raise public awareness of relevant issues
Attend international conferences and events
Make written and oral statements at these
events
• Organize side events
• Have opportunities to network and lobby
WHAT CAN WUCWO, AS A CATHOLIC
NGO, DO?
• All the actions noted in the previous slide
PLUS
• Join forces with other Catholic inspired NGO’s and
follow issues affecting women, intervening from the
perspective of our Catholic values
• Reinforce the impact of the Catholic message in public
debate
• Affirm clearly the values of the Catholic identity
• Develop a culture of collaboration with other Catholic
NGO’s
• Present effective presence and action, providing a
Catholic role model
WHAT DID POPE JOHN PAUL II SAY
ABOUT NGO’S?
“No organisation, not even the United Nations or
any of its specialized agencies, can alone solve the
global problems which are constantly brought to its
attention. It is then the privileged task of nongovernmental organizations to help bring these
concerns into the communities and the homes of
the people and to bring back to the established
agencies the priorities and aspirations of the
people in a way that all solutions and projects
which are envisaged may be truly adapted to the
needs of the human person.”
WHY SHOULD WUCWO BE AN NGO?
• We have a sacred responsibility to ensure that we
have done our best to help others who share this
life and this earth with us.
• All men are our brothers
• The Decree on the Apostolate of the Laity states
(14): “A vast field for the apostolate has opened
up at national and international levels for the
laity…Catholics should feel themselves obligated
to promote the true common good”
• NGO status allows WUCWO to promote the true
common good at several international bodies

WUCWO’S VOICE IS HEARD
THROUGHOUT THE WORLD
THROUGH OUR INTERNATIONAL
REPRESENTATIVES (IR)
The task of the International Representative is to:
• Know and support WUCWO’s Mission, Goals and
priorities
• Know how to interact with the WUCWO Board
and the International Committee
• Keep the WUCWO Board and International
Committee connected with the IR’s actions
• Inform the Board members of what is happening
in the agency to which the IR is accredited
INTERNATIONAL REPRESENTATIVE
REQUIREMENTS
• Generous dedication to matters affecting women, children
and families, justice and peace
• Excellent religious formation and knowledge of the Social
Doctrine of the Church
• Leadership experience
• Ability to network and interact tactfully with people of
different nationalities and cultures
• Research skills to access relevant credible information to
use in advocacy at international venues
• Bi/multi language capacity is an advantage as are computer
skills
• Sufficient time and strong commitment
THE BOARD AND THE IR
• The Board needs to know how best to
transmit their concerns, questions, or
thoughts to the IR’s for action at the IR’s
agency
• The Convener of the International Committee
can act as a bridge between the IR and the
Board, when necessary
• The Board must keep the IR’s cognizant of
work on WUCWO’s priorities
WUCWO AND ITS MEMBER
ORGANIZATIONS
It is important that WUCWO women ensure that
their national organizations lobby their
governments to instruct their diplomatic
missions to support resolutions in agreement
with Church teaching (reducing poverty,
providing education, etc.) and to oppose those
resolutions and treaties that contain language
counter to Church teaching (abortion, samesex marriage, etc.)
MORE DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
• How can the Board interact best with our IR’s?
– Through the Convener of the International
Committee?
– Through the Secretariat?
– Through direct contact with an IR?
• How can the Board make their member
organizations aware of WUCWO’s international
priorities?
• How can members of the International
Committee that are not Board members feel
included and involved?
THANK YOU
