Manufacturing Systems will always
remain crucial for economy !




2 million enterprises, many of which are
SMEs, need to adapt to new context
& sustainable development
Research is a must to help solving society
problems and to maintain competitiveness
Cooperation is needed to achieve critical
mass and create sufficient impact
However Europe needs a revised
research system ...
21/07/2015 - Brussels
… from FP5 to FP6




Higher need to integrate European
Research Activities, public and private
Balance between breakthrough oriented
activities and more society driven ones
Need to structure and to strengthen
foundations of the European Research
Area (e.g. enlargement)
… limited funds (5% of EU public funds)
therefore obligation to prioritise
21/07/2015 - Brussels
Research is needed … but should
shift existing paths towards
sustainable development ...
Economic
activity
Minimisation
Sustainable
development
Business as usual
Impacts on
environment & society
21/07/2015 - Brussels
In this context, research priorities, for
future production systems, could be ...
Considering dematerialisation
i.e. reducing material consumption (e.g. miniaturisation,
study of new consumption and production patterns)
Innovation
Added Value
e.g. optimisation
of value chain,
cost reduction,
reconfigurable
systems
Integration
e.g. new enabling
technologies, ebased tools,
modelling &
simulation
e.g. concurrency, life cycle approaches, product-services,
extended enterprise, from information to knowledge, etc
21/07/2015 - Brussels
Suggested Research Priorities ...
Nanotechnologies:
Concentration on
Long term interdisciplinary research
Intelligent Materials:
Looking for
high added value
System approach and transformation technologies
New processes:
In support to
future production systems
Intelligent, clean and safe production, life cycle of
products, services & industrial systems
21/07/2015 - Brussels

Nanotechnology
The new approach, from “small” to
macro-structures presents challenges and
huge opportunities and economic potential ...
Proposed RTD priorities:




nano-science
nano-biotechnologies
nano-scale engineering & nano-devices
multi-sectorial applications...
21/07/2015 - Brussels

Intelligent Materials
Since materials represent 30 - 40% of
product costs, higher added value, new
sustainable and knowledge intensive
materials needs to be looked at
Proposed RTD priorities:



Fundamental knowledge
Production / transformation of new materials
Engineering support for customised
applications
21/07/2015 - Brussels

Future Production Processes
to substantially improve quality, safety and
resource efficiency; reduce consumption
Proposed RTD priorities:




Adaptation of production to radical
innovations (e.g. nanotechnologies)
Converging info and production technologies
Resource efficiency, safety, added-value,
& sustainability of industrial systems
New life cycle design / production concepts
21/07/2015 - Brussels
Objectives of European Aerospace
Priority 4 in the
EC proposal
for the 6th FP
The aim of activities carried out is two fold :
•
To consolidate, by integrating its research
efforts, the position of EU aerospace industry
vis-à-vis increasingly strong world competition
•
To help exploit the potential of EU research in
this sector with a view to improving safety and
environmental protection
21/07/2015 - Brussels
Goals in aeronautics
Increase the competitiveness of EU industry
with regard to commercial aircraft, engines
and equipement
Reduce environmental nuisances and loads
(CO2 and NOX emissions, noise)
Increase aircraft safety in the context of the
substantial rise in air traffic
Increase the capacity and safety of the
aviation system, in support to the “Single
European Sky” (ATC & ATM systems)
21/07/2015 - Brussels
Goals in space
Community space activities, in close
coordination with ESA, to strenghen the
coherence of the very major investment
involved, will address the implementation of :
The Galileo satellite navigation project
The GMES platform for monitoring for
environmental and security
Advanced research needed to integrate the
space segment and the Earth segment in the
field of communications
