Wittenberg in China: On the Silk Road

is an interdisciplinary summer study abroad program

that introduces students to both contemporary western China and the historic Silk Road through 

experiential learning activities

The Silk Road

is both a metaphor for the historic exchanges of religions, arts, material goods, ideas and peoples of China, India, Persia, Mongolia and the rest of the “west”, and the actual places where such exchanges took place. Students will explore both. This course is designed for students to learn about, learn from, and learn by doing as they study and travel along the Silk Road.

The program will begin at the Silk Road's eastern terminus in Xi'an, and continue west to the oases of Jiayuguan, Dunhuang, Turfan, Urumqi and Hotan in China's westernmost provinces before returning to Beijing.

Costs :

We currently project the program fee will be $4,950, (additional $540 tuition for non Wittenberg students) depending on the number of student participants, and subject to fluctuations in Chinese prices and exchange rate. The comprehensive fee includes all program costs in China: • • • •

Learning activities include interaction with Chinese students, artisans & families, exploration of cities & villages, experiential & independent explorations.

The program fee does not include the cost of international airfare, transportation to/from US airports, passport, Chinese visa, gifts for Chinese hosts, single occupancy premium, and personal items purchased in China.
