Fear of Communism…How did the
Government Respond?
1. US public feared the spread of
communism at home.
2. Some people said Truman was not strict
enough.
3. So, he created the Loyalty Review
Board.
• To investigate and make sure all government
employees are loyal to the US.
Other government agencies policed
the country:
1. House Un-American Activities Committee
-investigated other parts of country: Movies
-some arrested for not giving names of
people who the government accused of
being guilty (communists)
2. Blacklist created: people thought to be guilty
(communist)
Hollywood Ten
3. McCarran Act: made it unlawful to
create a dictatorship in US.
• Took away freedom of thought and speech.
• Allowed for the detention of dangerous, disloyal, or
subversive people. Illegal to advocate dictatorship.
• Truman vetoed the bill.
• Congress overrode the veto.
