Presented by : Hadeel Armanazi What is a Realia? Realia is a term for real things ,concrete objects that are used in the classroom to build background knowledge and vocabularies . Why do you use Realia? 1. To build up learner’s vocabularies especially in first stage of language acquisition (silent period ). Why do you use Realia? 2. To make sure that the learner has in his mind the right picture for the vocabulary which So, they Chopsticks must matches its reality. use a chopsticks ….. mean a toy Why do you use Realia? 3. To engage students and let them be involved in knowledge especially with content that are very dry and dense. Here the rule of the realia is to break the ice in the class and get students more involved . Example : grammar ,preposition –etc. Why do you use Realia? 4. To Hit many subjects at that same time . Realia will help teacher integrate more than one subject in the same lesson. examples : 1.Real animal will serve as: Revising body parts (English)+ Counting the body part (Math)+ The habitat of that animal (science) 2.Real shapes: Will serve as: Manupative for counting+ Recognizing colors+ The real resource of the material What if realia is not available? Teacher then, should move down from concrete to replica such as model. Can you give some examples where we have to use a model instead of realia? Examples : Study of vehicles 2. study of planets What if realia is not available? Or to move down to semiconcrete objects such as photograph or illustration . Example: The study of weather types Snow Thunder Realia can be best use with the following themes: Craft materials Food Realia Animals Clothing Farm Implementing : 1. Identify opportunities to use realia: before the lesson try to identify vocabularies which could be unfamiliar to your students and prepare for each one corresponding realia. 2.collecting realia: Collect and store realia in a containers in your class for your future lessons. 3.Build a library of realia : collaborate with other teachers and you school to build a library of realia that can be shared for major themes studies. 4.Use field trips as realia take a field trip .Give your students the opportunity to really understand and experience their study and knowledge . Conclusion The use of realia in the class supports students learning in a wide variety of ways. Introducing real objects that can be seen, felt and manipulate is a powerful way to connect vocabulary to real life .
