Breaking Through the Force Field

Driving Forces and Restraining Forces of the
Organizational Force Field
All problem situations,
regardless of the
specific kind of
problem, have the
same general
structure.
The three elements of
this structure are:
1) the problem state
2) the solved state, and
3) the solution path.

What is Force Field Analysis?
Force field analysis is one of the most influential
developments in the field of social science. Force field
analysis provides a framework for looking at the factors
(forces) that influence a situation, originally social situations. It
looks at forces that are either driving movement toward a goal
(helping forces) or blocking movement toward a goal (hindering
forces). The principle, developed by Kurt Lewin, is a significant
contribution to the fields of social science, psychology, social
psychology, organizational development, process management,
and change management.

Field Theory in Social Science, Washington, D.C.: American Psychological Association, 1997.
Force Field Analysis – Analyzing Change Factors
Force field analysis is useful when
looking at the variables involved in
planning and implementing a change
program and overcoming resistance to
change.
Driving Forces
Driving forces are those forces affecting a
situation that are pushing in a particular
direction; they tend to initiate a change and
keep it going.
Restraining Forces
Restraining forces are forces acting to
restrain or decrease the driving forces
