All technical queries regarding EndNote (eg installation) should be directed to IT Care at tel: 6516 2080 or email [email protected] 6 EndNote Library Launch EndNote X2 Library Window Groups Create a Library 7 Launch EndNote X2 • Start > Programs > EndNote > EndNote Program • Start > Run > \\libstore\endnote • ..\ENX2 Exercise\Sample_Library.enl 8 Library Window 9 Groups • Add up to 500 custom & smart groups to a library • Types of Groups: • • • • • Permanent &Temporary Groups Custom Groups Smart Groups Online Search EndNote Web 10 Custom Group • • • • • Group references into user preferred groups. A permanent group that remains unless deleted. Several different ways to create a new group, or to add a reference to a new group. E.g. Right click on “group pane”, create pane / Right click on reference “add reference to..” Creates/fills permanent “custom” group. 11 Create a Library • File > New… • Key-in the library filename (*.enl) • Select location to save the library • Click “Save” to create the new library 12 References Direct Export Import Text File Online Search Manual Data Entry 13 Direct Export • “One click” export directly from database. • Usually button says “Send to EndNote/RefMan/Procite”, “direct export” or similar. • When file is downloaded, in file dialogue box select “open” instead of “save”. 14 Direct Export - JSTOR 15 Direct Export - JSTOR 16 Direct Export - JSTOR 17 Import Text File • • • • Export text file and save on desktop Open EndNote (File => Import) Browse and select downloaded txt file Select Import option (filter) 18 Import Text File – Sociological Abstracts 19 Online Search • • • Search free databases (Medline) and library catalogues (including LINC, Library of Congress etc) within EndNote desktop. All references found will be imported. LINC results – “Import Text file” versus “Online search” 20 Online Search Change to 10 21 Manual Data Entry http://www.endnote.com/training/WMVs/ENX2/06-Manual_Data_Entry.wmv 22 Manual Inputting - PERIND Open an EndNote Library Click on Reference Click on New Reference At the Reference Type drop-down menu, select the correct template for the reference to be input (i.e. Journal article, conference paper, etc.) Begin inputting Complete and close EndNote Library Note: For joint authors, press the enter key after inputting each author’s name 23 Manual Data Entry - Sample 24 EndNote Flowchart Direct Export INPUT OUTPUT Import Text File Online Search Manual Data Entry EndNote Library Cite While You Write Word Processor 25 Cite While You Write CWYW Toolbars in Microsoft Word Find & Insert Citations Customize Citations Additional CWYW Features 26 Cite While You Write (CWYW) • Easily and quickly cite references, figures & tables, and create a paper with properly formatted citations, a bibliography, figures & tables • DO NOT edit the citations and bibliographies in Word Processor. Edit the reference in the EndNote Library ONLY • To locate citation and bibliography fields, change the Microsoft Word’s Field Shading option 27 CWYW Toolbars in Microsoft Word • Microsoft Word 2003 • Microsoft Word 2007 28 Find & Insert Citations • Find Citation(s) This command will provide a search window where you can enter text that is in any field. You can then select references from a list of those that contain your search terms and insert them into your paper. • Insert Selected Citation(s) This command will insert the references you selected in EndNote into your document at the location of the Word cursor. 29 Customize Citations • Format Bibliography This command will allow you to change the EndNote style used for your document. It will also let you make other changes to the layout of your bibliography, such as adding titles and changing the line spacing. 30 Customize Citations • Edit Citation(s) Use this command to make any changes inside a citation, such as adding page numbers or removing author names from authordate citations. • Edit Library Reference(s) This command allows you to quickly access the specific record for any selected citation. 31 Additional CWYW Features • Find Figure(s) This command will provide a search window much like the Find Citation window where you can enter text that is in any field in the record you want to find. You can then select references from a list of those records with figures attached that contain your search terms. A reference to the figure will be inserted at the location of your cursor.
