Theme: Rural Communities

One aspect that is unique
to rural communities is the
amount of land for farming.
There are many different
types of farms that have
different products and
purposes. All of these farms
contribute in different ways
to the community.
 Today I will be taking you
on a virtual tour to visit
some dairy farms to learn
their main contribution to
their community.

Introduction
 Ever
wonder when your eating your cereal
in the morning or drinking a glass of milk,
where that milk actually comes from?
 You may think that it comes from a grocery
store, which is true but… it actually comes
from someplace else before that.
Where does milk come from?
Milk comes from a cow after she has a calf.
See a calf being born
Milking Process
Milk is held in the cows udder and the baby calf feeds
on the milk which is called Colostrum.
After the baby calf is weaned from the mothers milk
the mother cow continues to produce milk.
Can you find the udder?
What other parts does a dairy cow have?
Make a list
Milking Parlor
 The
cows are brought into a special parlor
where they are milked.

Storage
 The
raw milk is then stored in special
Containers to keep the milk cold until they
are picked up by special refrigerated
trucks.
Learn about these trucks
Where do those trucks go?
The trucks take the milk to a plant where they
make sure the milk is safe for us to drink.
Visit a Processing Plant
Now you can bring the milk home!
 After
the milk has been tested and
processed it is shipped to grocery stores
all over.

Once the milk is made it can be a key ingredient
for many other products that we eat.
