• THE COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING IS TAKING SAFETY SERIOUSLY
• PLEASE SUPPORT THE COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING EFFORT TO STRENGTHEN
OUR SAFETY AWARENESS, INSURE PROPER TRAINING AND PREPARE THE
STUDENTS FOR A SUCCESSFUL CAREER IN VARIOUS INDUSTRIES
• IN TODAY’S WORKPLACE ENVIRONMENT YOU WILL TYPICALLY FIND A ZERO
TOLERANCE RULE FOR UNSAFE ACTS
• PROTECT YOURSELF, OTHERS AND YOUR JOB BY ADOPTING A
PERMANENT SAFETY-THINKING

PERSONAL SAFETY
• YOU HAVE THE PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR SAFETY
• SAFETY GLASSES AND CLOSED-TOE SHOES MUST BE WORN IN ANY LAB, EXCEPT COMPUTER
LABS

WHERE MATERIAL IS BEING MIXED, HEATED, MODIFIED, OR OTHERWISE MANIPULATED”)
• CONSUMPTION OF FOOD OR BEVERAGES IN LABORATORIES IS FORBIDDEN
• EMERGENCY (24 HOURS)-(704) 687-2200 (POLICE AND PUBLIC SAFETY DISPATCH)
• NEVER WORK IN A LABORATORY ALONE. MUST HAVE AT LEAST ONE OTHER PERSON IN
THE LAB WITH YOU

GENERAL LABORATORY SAFETY
• KEEP AISLES CLEAR (32” MIN.), 36" IN FRONT OF ELECTRICAL PANELS
• MAINTAIN ACCESS TO ALL EXITS, EYEWASHES, FIRE EXTINGUISHERS
AND EMERGENCY SHOWERS
• DO NOT USE CORRIDORS FOR STORAGE OR WORK AREAS
• GAS CYLINDERS WILL BE MOVED AND INSTALLED BY STAFF
PERSONNEL

CHEMICAL SAFETY
• ALL CHEMICALS MUST BE CLEARLY LABELED WITH THE SUBSTANCE NAME,
CONCENTRATION, DATE, AND NAME OF THE INDIVIDUAL RESPONSIBLE
• USE VOLATILE AND FLAMMABLE COMPOUNDS IN A FUME HOOD
• INSTRUCTORS, RESEARCHERS AND LABORATORY MANAGERS MUST ENSURE
THAT STUDENTS ARE PROPERLY TRAINED IN THE SAFE HANDLING AND
DISPOSAL OF CHEMICALS
• INCOMING CHEMICAL ORDERS MUST BE INSPECTED BY KNOWLEDGEABLE
PEOPLE. IF YOU ARE NOT SURE, ASK!

SAFETY AUTHORITY
• SHOULD ANY ISSUES ARISE WITH THE IMPLEMENTATION OF SAFETY,
YOU WILL BE SUPPORTED BY LABORATORY MANAGERS,
INSTRUCTORS, THE DEPARTMENT CHAIRS AND THE DEAN OF THE
COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING
• SAFETY CAMERAS ARE IN OPERATION IN MOST LABS
• DO NOT HESITATE TO LET US KNOW OF ANY SAFETY PROBLEM

DIRECTORY ON THE N: DRIVE (N:\UNCC.EDU\COE\DEPT\COE-SAFETY )
CONTAINING THE LAB-SAFETY INSPECTION LIST, SAFETY SIGNS FOR
PRINTOUT AND A COLLECTION OF LSA’S (LABORATORY SAFETY
ANALYSIS).
• EACH LAB SHOULD HAVE A DEDICATED SAFETY COMPUTER WITH
RELEVANT INFO SUCH AS MSDS SHEETS AND SAFETY HANDBOOKS
