“Pride Goes Before Destruction”
Proverbs 6:18
Pride is used in two senses…
• Matthew 22:39 And the second is like it: 'You shall love
your neighbor as yourself.’
• Romans 12:2 And do not be conformed to this world,
but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that
you may prove what is that good and acceptable and
perfect will of God.
• 1Timothy 4:12 Let no one despise your youth, but be
an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in
love, in spirit, in faith, in purity.
• Acts 2:47 praising God and having favor with all the
people. And the Lord added to the church daily those
who were being saved.

Pride is sin…
• Proverbs 21:4 A haughty look, a proud heart,
And the plowing of the wicked are sin.
• Proverbs 6:16 These six things the LORD hates,
Yes, seven are an abomination to Him: 17 A
proud look, A lying tongue, Hands that shed
innocent blood, 18 A heart that devises wicked
plans, Feet that are swift in running to evil,
19 A false witness who speaks lies, And one
who sows discord among brethren.
Pride is sin…
• Proverbs 16:5 Everyone proud in heart is an
abomination to the LORD; Though they join
forces, none will go unpunished.
• Mark 7:21 For from within, out of the heart of
men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries,
fornications, murders, 22 thefts, covetousness,
wickedness, deceit, lewdness, an evil eye,
blasphemy, pride, foolishness. 23 All these evil
things come from within and defile a man.”
Pride is sin…
• Genesis 3:1-6
• 1John 2:15 Do not love the world or the things
in the world. If anyone loves the world, the
love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that
is in the world--the lust of the flesh, the lust of
the eyes, and the pride of life--is not of the
Father but is of the world. 17 And the world is
passing away, and the lust of it; but he who
does the will of God abides forever.
Some examples of pride…
•
•
•
•
Nebuchadnezzar
Luke 18:9-14, the Pharisee
Acts 20-23, Herod
Even Jesus’ disciples…
Pride will lead to other things…
• Proverbs 13:10 By pride comes nothing but
strife, But with the well-advised is wisdom.
• Psalm 10:4 The wicked in his proud
countenance does not seek God; God is in
none of his thoughts.
• Proverbs 16:18 Pride goes before destruction,
And a haughty spirit before a fall.
• 1Corinthians 10:12Therefore let him who
thinks he stands take heed lest he fall.
Consider some different forms of pride…
• Mark 12:38 Then He said to them in His
teaching, "Beware of the scribes, who desire
to go around in long robes, love greetings in
the marketplaces, 39 the best seats in the
synagogues, and the best places at feasts,
40 who devour widows' houses, and for a
pretense make long prayers. These will receive
greater condemnation.”
• Luke 18:10-14
Different forms of pride…
• 2Corinthians 7:10 For godly sorrow produces
repentance leading to salvation, not to be
regretted; but the sorrow of the world
produces death.
Different forms of pride…
• 1Chronicles 29:12 Both riches and honor come
from You, And You reign over all. In Your hand
is power and might; In Your hand it is to make
great And to give strength to all.
• James 1:17 Every good gift and every perfect
gift is from above, and comes down from the
Father of lights, with whom there is no
variation or shadow of turning.
Different forms of pride…
• Psalm 62:10 Do not trust in oppression, Nor
vainly hope in robbery; If riches increase, Do not
set your heart on them.
• 1Timothy 6:7For we brought nothing into this
world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.
8 And having food and clothing, with these we
shall be content. 9 But those who desire to be rich
fall into temptation and a snare, and into many
foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in
destruction and perdition.
Different forms of pride…
• 1Corinthians 8:1 Now concerning things offered
to idols: We know that we all have knowledge.
Knowledge puffs up, but love edifies. 2 And if
anyone thinks that he knows anything, he knows
nothing yet as he ought to know.
• Psalm 111:10 The fear of the LORD is the
beginning of wisdom; A good understanding have
all those who do His commandments. His praise
endures forever.
WE ALL Need to be reminded…
• Proverbs 3:5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart,
And lean not on your own understanding;
• Proverbs 26:12 Do you see a man wise in his own
eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for him.
• Romans 12:16 Be of the same mind toward one
another. Do not set your mind on high things, but
associate with the humble. Do not be wise in
your own opinion.
Looking to cure pride…
• Galatians 6:3 For if anyone thinks himself to be
something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself.
• Romans 12:3 For I say, through the grace given to me,
to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself
more highly than he ought to think, but to think
soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of
faith.
• Micah 6:8 He has shown you, O man, what is good;
And what does the LORD require of you But to do justly,
To love mercy, And to walk humbly with your God?
Have the proper attitude this day!
• 1Corinthians 13:4 Love suffers long and is kind;
love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is
not puffed up;
• 1John 1:8 If we say that we have no sin, we
deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If
we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to
forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all
unrighteousness. 10 If we say that we have not
sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in
us.
