 Ingredients are non-carcinogenic
 Less than .5% total phosphorus
 Use solutions do not contribute to smog formation or poor indoor air
quality
 Non combustible
 No heavy metals
 No alkyl phenol ethoxylates
 Primary packages are recyclable
 Low skin, eye and respiratory irritation potential
 No ozone-depleting substances
Green

According to United States executive order
13101, environmentally preferable products or
services have a lesser or reduced effect on
human health and the environment when
compared with competing products and services
that serve the same purpose.
Why go Green?
 Protect people in our care-the occurrence of asthma
is epidemic and doubled from 6.8 million cases to
14.6 million cases.
 Increase operator and employee productivity and
satisfaction-statistics show that productivity
increases .5 to 7.0 percent-translating into 3 to 34
minutes saved a day
 Create a competitive advantage-differentiate
yourself from others
Facts-Education
 Indoor air is often two to five times more
contaminated than outdoor air, according to
the EPA and its scientific advisory board.
 Childhood asthma has nearly doubled in the
last twenty years, according to the American
Lung Association.
 Asthma is the number one cause of
absenteeism in schools.
Facts-Office Building
 Allergic reactions to “sick” indoor environments
account for more than ten million workdays missed
by U.S employees each year.
 Six percent of janitors incur some type of injury due
to chemical exposure each year.
 2/3rds of all commercial buildings have “sick
building syndrome”.
 Green buildings (LEED buildings) are continuing to
emerge as they have been shown to provide
environmental, economic, health, and safety
benefits.
Facts-Healthcare
 Patients have a greater percentage of
chemical sensitivities and weakened immune
systems.
 Healthcare workers are exposed to a greater
degree of chemicals in the workplace than
most other occupations.
 Disposal costs of hazardous wastes continue
to rise.
LEED Rating System
What is LEED?
 The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design.
 This system encourages and accelerates global adoption of
sustainable green building and development practices
through the creation and implementation of universally
understood and accepted tools and performance criteria.
 LEED certification is obtained after submitting an
application documenting compliance with the requirements
of the rating system.
 Certification is granted solely by the Green Building
Council responsible for issuing the LEED system used on
the project.
What is LEED?
 LEED is the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction
and operation of high performance green buildings.
 LEED gives building owners and operators the tools they need to have
an immediate and measurable impact on their buildings performance.
 LEED promotes a whole building approach to sustainability by
recognizing performance in five key areas of human and environmental
health:
 Sustainable site development
 Water savings
 Energy efficiency
 Materials selection
 Indoor environmental quality
How is LEED Developed?
 LEED rating systems are developed through an open,
consensus-based process led by LEED committees.
 Each volunteer committee is composed of a diverse group of
practitioners and experts representing a cross section of the
building and construction industry.
 The key elements of the USGBC’s consensus process
include a balanced and transparent committee structure,
technical advisory group that ensure scientific consistency
and rigor, opportunities for stakeholder comment and
review, member ballot of new rating systems, and a fair and
open appeals process.
8-Step Program
Step #1
Create A Plan
 Consider writing a mission statement
 Your plan should consider the people who
are involved, the products required and the
procedures to use them
Step #2
Stop Dirt At The Dorr
 80% of dirt comes from the outside
 Mats at all entrances-inside and out
 Use high quality mats-longer life
 10-12 feet in length
 Preferable rubber backed
 Direct traffic onto the mats-use barriers
Step #3
Use Green Sealed Chemicals
 Inventory existing cleaners and replace with
Green Seal or Environmental Choice
approved cleaners.
 Consider a closed dilution control system.
Step #4
Ensure Proper Vacuuming
 Use CRI(Carpet and Rug Institute) Green
label vacuums.
 Vacuum filter bag programs/schedule
 Ergonomic-your equipment should protect
the user’s health, reduce fatigue and injuries.
Step #6
Use Green Paper Products
 Follow EPA comprehensive procurement
guidelines for sanitary paper/tissue
 Use roll tissues where applicable
Step #7
Use Green Can Liners
 Follow EPA comprehensive procurement
guidelines for can liners-10-100% post
consumer content
Step #8
Recycling Program
 Implement an effective recycling program
 Rinse food containers and soda cans to not
attract pests
 Train occupants so they understand how to
properly dispose of refuse
 Make occupants responsible for separating
different types of refuse
Additional Steps
 Omni Air odor management systems
 Water saving devices
 Touch free devices-reduce cross
contamination
Green Developments
 Legislative action in the state of Illinois has
resulted in the Healthy Schools Campaign.
This development will likely spread to other
states in the US.
