Impact of Diet on Health Mrs. Dickerson Food Science How Do Calories Relate to Nutrition? • A calorie is the amount of energy released when nutrients are burned. • The more calories the food provides, the more energy it has the potential to give us. • Some foods contain more calories than others. • Our bodies cannot always use all the calories we take in. How Do Calories Relate to Nutrition? • Stored calories are saved by the body as fat. • Some foods provide us with empty calories that provide no nutrition. • Too many empty calories can result in weight gain and poor health. Types of Diet Labels • Diets high in calcium can help prevent osteoporosis. • Diets high in fiber can help prevent cancer. • Diets high in fruits and vegetables can help prevent cancer. • Diets high in fruit, vegetables, and grains can help prevent heart disease. Types of Diet Labels • Diets low in fat can help prevent cancer. • Diets low in saturated fat and cholesterol can help prevent heart disease. • Diets low in sodium can help prevent high blood pressure. RDA • RDA stands for Recommended Dietary Allowance. – Level of nutrient intake required to meet the nutritional needs of the average healthy person. – Started around WWII – Shows up at the end of food labels
