Parents also have access to review their child’s current contact information, which may be used to help the school maintain accurate contact data. 5 7/21/2015 HOW TO SIGN UP FOR THE PARENT PORTAL Go to the Minneapolis Website: http://www.mpls.k12.mn.us 1st Click on, “Parents”. 2nd Click on, “Parent Portal” 3rd Click on, “registration instructions”. Finally , “click here” to create an account or login to the Parent Portal. 6 7/21/2015 RIGOROUS COURSES We encourage taking challenging or the most rigorous courses possible: Advanced Placement (AP Courses) College in the Schools (CIS Courses) Post Secondary Enrollment Options (PSEO). 7 7/21/2015 ADVANCED PLACEMENT (AP) COURSES AP English Literature & Biology Composition AP English Language & Composition U.S. History Spanish Chemistry Environmental Science Calculus 1 & 2 Statistics May earn college credit if student passes the AP Exam. 8 7/21/2015 COLLEGE IN THE SCHOOLS (CIS) COURSES College level classes taught at South High with U of M curriculum: CIS Literature Writing Economics Government Chinese German French Student earn high school and college credit An official U of M transcript will be started 9 7/21/2015 TH 10 GRADERS (APUSH) Students at South High will be taking: AP US History or AP Humanities 2 Students can expect about 1-2 hours homework per night Tutoring for APUSH is available after school Monday-Friday 10 PSEO 7/21/2015 (POST SECONDARY ENROLLMENT OPTIONS) Juniors & Seniors may qualify to take college course Earn both high school and college credits South High schedule works around PSEO courses Many (but not all) colleges allow PSEO credits to transfer in See your counselor to see if PSEO is right for you! Watch for applications deadlines. Applications are due in the Spring prior to taking PSEO. 11 7/21/2015 PRACTICE FOR COLLEGE ENTRANCE EXAMS 10TH GRADERS PLAN Test = Pre-ACT Exam Who: Given to all 10th graders in Minneapolis. Cost: Free for students Good practice for a college entrance exam. 12 7/21/2015 PRACTICE FOR COLLEGE ENTRANCE EXAMS 11TH GRADERS PSAT Test = Pre-SAT Exam Given to Juniors who register and to Sophomores if space is available! When: October 13th, 2010 Cost: $15.00 High scores will qualify Juniors for the National Merit Scholarship. 13 7/21/2015 ACT/SAT Required for entrance into most 4 year post-secondary schools Recommended to take in April or June of junior year Most colleges accept either one, ACT more commonly taken than SAT in the mid-west.
