You need to use your mouse to see this presentation © Heidi Behrens Es gibt……..(there is) The expression ‘es gibt’ (there is) is always followed by an OBJECT!! (accusative) What does that mean?????? Well, let’s have a look at what happens to the word ‘a’ in the following two sentences. Subj. Verb Subj. Das ist ein Markt (That is a market) Subj. Verb Obj. Es gibt einen Markt (There is a market) Have you noticed…..? ‘ein Markt’ in sentence 1 changes to ‘einen Markt’ in sentence 2. THIS IS BECAUSE ‘einen Markt‘ IS THE OBJECT (Accusativ) OF THE SENTENCE!!!! The good news…….. This change only happens to masculine (blue) nouns Subj. Verb Obj. Es gibt einen Markt eine Post ein Kino -- Geschäfte But what if… I wanted to say that there isn’t a market or a cinema ? No problem – have a look at this: Subj. Verb Obj. Es gibt keinen (There is no….) keine kein Markt Post Kino keine Geschäfte All you need to do is stick a ‘k’ in front of the ‘einen’, ‘eine’, ‘ein’. Have you noticed what happened to the plural object? Well look at this again: Es gibt -----Geschäfte Es gibt keine Geschäfte (there are shops) (there are no shops) Remember….. After the expression ‘es gibt’ you always need an OBJECT. If the OBJECT is masculine ‘ein’ becomes ‘(k)einen’!
