Farming in the central Valley Central Valley is located in California Largest farming area in Rocky Mountains Rich soil, hot climate, dry summers, long growing season Question Where is Central Valley located? Rivers Central valley has two major rivers to supply water Sacramento San joajuin water Rivers are not enough water Dams and canals were built to irrigate the land Irrigate means to supply with water Harvesting Time Every kind of crop is grown in Central Valley Machines are used to prepare the soil, irrigate the field, and harvest the crop Many fruits and vegetables still Need to be picked by hand Harvesting Time A lot of work is done by migrant workers Picking vegetables and fruit by hand is hardwork Cattle Not everything on a farm is fresh vegetables and fruits Farmers raise livestock Cattle is used for meat and milk Cattle California is the largest milk-producing state Dairy Farming Dairy cows are cows that produce milk There a 10 million dairy cows in the United States Cows graze in pastures Dairy Pastures Pastures are grassy fields Cows eat 50 pounds of food a day and 15 gallons of water a day Dairy cows produce 1,800 gallons of milk a single year Dairy Products Dairy Products are products made from milk Butter, cheese, yogurt Milk to Cow Milking the Cow Twice a day machines milk a cow Machine runs through a pipe to a tank to keep cold Milking Step two The milk is checked for high quality Then loaded into a refrigerated truck Then taken to a dairy, a place where it is prepared to be sold Milking the Cow Step 3 Testing and Packaging Tested and heated to kill germs, and then put into containers Cow to you Dairy to store to you Milk products are taken from the dairy and delivered to stores Now you can buy them Life on a Ranch Ranches- a large farm where cattle, sheep, or horses are raised Sheep and cattle need a lot of space to roam and they eat a lot of food each day! Step 1 Shearing or cutting the wool off the sheep It is like a haircut From Sheep to Sweater Step 2 The wool is sent to a factory to be weighed, sorted, and washed. Then the wool is dyed and untangled. Fishing Around The World For millions of years we catch fish for food In Japan and Norway, fish are the main source of food Coast or edges of continents Fishing Types of fish cod, shrimp, and red snapper live near the ocean floor Trawls are nets shaped like funnels with one end closed, they drag the nets to the ocean floor Fishing There are fish near the ocean floor Fishers use seine Seines are cast out by boats called seiners Seines are nets that is used to catch fish near the surface of the water Questions In what parts of the ocean are most fish caught?
