Wassily Kandinsky
1866-1944
I applied streaks and blobs of colors onto the canvas with a
palette knife and made them sing with all the intensity I could.
Color is the keyboard , the eyes are the harmonies, the soul is
the piano with many strings. The artist is the hand that plays,
touching one key or another, to cause vibrations in the soul.
Wassily Kandinsky
• Born in Moscow,
Russia in 1866.
• Was a professor of
Law and Economics
at the University of
Moscow.
• He gave up his job to
study painting in
Germany.
• He taught art at the
Bauhaus school and
painted until the
Nazis came into
power.
• In 1933, he went to
France where he
remained for the
rest of his life.
• His paintings started
as realistic and then
merged into nonobjective.
• Kandinsky was very
spiritual about his
art making.
• He believed that art
was based on the
harmony of color
and form. Every
color had an inner
voice and a
meaning.
