The driver/operator should follow a systematic procedure
for inspecting apparatus
This ensures that all important items are checked every time
the inspection is made.

Checklist
You will be required to perform an apparatus readiness check
on a fire apparatus.
Apparatus Maintenance
Maintenance – keeping something in a state of usefulness or
readiness.
Repair – to restore or replace that which has become
inoperable.

Engine
The most important phases of engine maintenance are regular
service inspections.
Apparatus Maintenance
Daily Maintenance:
Includes checking oil level, radiator coolant level, fuel levels,
tires (proper inflation, wear, cuts), equipment inventory,
checking visible and audible warning signals.
Apparatus Maintenance
Weekly Maintenance:
Bleeding moisture from air brake tanks, removing equipment
from apparatus and cleaning, and the starting of all portable
engines.

Periodic Maintenance:
Includes lubricating all motor, gear, or hand operated
appliances according to manufacturer’s specification

Batteries
Check voltage, specific gravity & corrosion
Check terminals & cables
Air Filter
Should be serviced by qualified personnel as required.
In Cab Inspection
Mirrors & seat are properly adjusted
All electrical switches are in the off position prior to starting
the apparatus
Let engine warm up before putting under full load (non
emergency responses)
Inspect seat belts, cuts & fraying

Gauges are properly working:
Speedometer, RPM gauge
Oil Pressure, Fuel
Ammeter/Voltmeter
Air pressure gauges,
Temperature gauges
Vacuum & Hydraulic Pressure gauges

Controls are properly working
Electrical Equipment switches
Turn signal switches
High bean headlight switches
Heating & AC switches
Radio Controls
Audible warning devices
Windshield wiper
Defroster controls

Daily
Operate the pump drive control & pump engages
All pump panel gages are functioning
Drain pump and hose lines completely
Operate pump controls
Inspect water & foam tanks
Check the underside for leaks
Check Deck guns or turrets for range of motion
Operate valves

Weekly
Flush the pump with clear water
Check & clean intake strainers
Check the pump gear box for proper oil level and traces of
water
Operate the pump primer with all pump valves closed

Operate the changeover valve
Check packing glands for leaks
Operate the pump pressure control devices
Operate the foam proportioning system
