An Age of Cities • Urbanization is the movement of population from farms to cities • Began slowly in the 1800s • Jobs became the draw to cities • Immigrants went to cities • African Americans came to the cities • Tenements were small apts that were located in apt buildings. Crowded areas in cities that catered to the poor • Disease was rampant as a result

The Urban Middle Class The Rich • Much less crowded • Better conditions • Crime rose in the cities • Poor bldg construction: fires broke out causing many deaths • Building codes established, which are standards for construction and safety.

• Professional fire depts and police depts helped when they were created

Religious Organizations Help the Poor • Social Gospel duty as Christians to help the poor • Mother Cabrini—Catholic saint who founded many hospitals to help the poor.

• Other faiths also contributed to assisting the poor but not to the extent of the Catholic Church
