Breaside Preparatory School
Year
Parents Information Meeting
Welcome to the World of Year 2!
► The
aim of this meeting is to give you a
little insight to organisation and
expectations of Year 2 and to give you an
idea of the curriculum that we cover.
Meet the Team
► Mrs
Clarke and Miss Burnham – 2T
► Mrs McCabe – 2M
► Year 2 will also be supported by a team of
experienced Teaching Assistants, who will
enhance the children’s progress through
both class based and individual activities.
Great Expectations!
Independence is the key!
► Throughout Year 2, the children will be
encouraged to be as independent as possible.
► They will be expected to be responsible
for their own belongings, work and behaviour.
Throughout the year we continually encourage and expect
the children to gain independence to prepare them for Year
3.
► In class the children are expected to;
► unpack their bags in the morning,
► put their reading books into the reading tray and hang up
their coats
► look after their personal possessions.
► Please encourage the children to come into the school
playground on their own to line up with their class.
►
Year 2 Curriculum
► The
subjects taught in Year 2 are based on the
National Curriculum and the Primary Framework
for Numeracy and Literacy. We use a mixture of
resources and schemes to enhance the curriculum
and the children’s learning.
► Our planning is extensive and we plan for the
needs of the individual child
and differentiate in the classroom
whenever appropriate.

Reading
►
The children will read individually at least three times a week to either
the classroom teacher or to one of the teacher assistants.
►
The reading scheme in Year 2 includes a variety of different schemes
eg. Oxford Reading Tree and Ginn, and includes both fiction and nonfiction books. The books have been organised into levels and the
children read a selection of books from each level.
►
When the teacher feels that the level has been achieved the child will
progress to the next level.
►
We must emphasise the importance of not comparing the books your
child is reading with other children in the class. Each child is an
individual and will have a different level of reading, understanding and
of reading experience.
►
Above all our aim is for the children to be happy independent readers
who have good understanding of the stories they have read
Writing
►
►
►
►
►
►
►
►
►
Throughout the year we encourage the children to become
independent writers, able to construct and convey meaning
through legible written language and write for many
different purposes.
The children will experience many forms of writing e.g.
Personal accounts e.g.. news
Creative story writing
Letter writing
Instructions
Poems
Invitations
Lists
Book Reviews
Labelled diagrams
Writing
Punctuation
► The children will be expected to use capital
letters and full stops.
► Throughout the year more complex
punctuation will be added such as commas,
question marks, exclamation marks and
speech marks.
► By the end of year 2 we expect many of the
children to be using more complex forms of
punctuation in their independent writing.
Handwriting
► The
children have been working through the
Spectrum Handwriting Scheme since Reception
and this will continue in Year 2 and throughout the
school.
► The children will practice their handwriting on a
daily basis as part of their early morning work and
as a class lesson.
► Please see your handouts for the examples of the
handwriting letters and their letter orientation.
Spelling
► High Frequency words
► Topic words
► Wow Words
► Numbers to 1000
► Months of the year
► Days of the Week
► The children will be given
a spelling test each
Friday including words from the word pattern of
that week. These will also include any tricky high
frequency words from time to time.
► Please follow the LOOK, COVER, WRITE, CHECK
policy!
Comprehension
► Each
week the children will have a lesson set aside
for comprehension
► The class will read through a short piece of text
and will discuss the story, unfamiliar words, the
characters and maybe predict an ending.
► The children will talk about their own feelings
towards the text and how they can relate to the
characters.
► After this introduction the children will then be
expected to answer questions about the text.
► They will be taught how to retrieve the answers
and how to formulate their own opinions
independently.
Numeracy
►
We follow the Numeracy Strategy for Year 2/3 and the New
Heinemann Maths scheme. Using both of these schemes
means that we are able to tweak the curriculum to the
needs of our children more effectively.
►
Much of our work is differentiated by task so that the
children are working at their own level. Extension and
reinforcement work is given when necessary.
►
We provide lots of practical activities for the children such
as working with cubes, counters money, weighing etc.
►
The children will become very familiar with the 100 square
and will use it to aid them to complete their work.

what has been learnt in school
The children are given spelling and maths homework once a week on a
Friday and is brought back to school the following Friday. This gives
the children the weekend and the rest of the week to complete their
homework.
►
It is important to create a special time when homework becomes a
priority and your child is given time and space to work quietly, without
disruption.
►
The length of the homework will be approximately 20/30 minutes.
►
Please could all homework be completed in pencil and not in felt tip
pen.
►
You may want to go through the homework with your child before and
after but try to let them complete it as independently as they can.

Assessment
►
►
►
►
Each term and where appropriate the children are given
tests in certain subjects to check on the progress they
have made.
In the Summer Term in May the children will sit the SATS
papers for English and Maths. These are teacher based
assessment tests which give levels to indicate where the
children are working at in relation to the National
Curriculum Levelling System.
In the Summer Term in June the children will be given the
standardised NFER tests, which give an age related
standardised score. The children are tested in English,
Maths and are given Verbal and Non-Verbal reasoning
papers.
As well as the above the children have on going teacher
assessment in all areas of the curriculum.
Reports and Parent Meetings
►
In line with the other year groups there will be 2 parents
evenings. One in the Autumn Term and the other in the
Spring Term.
►
In the Summer Term the children will be given a full report
of their years achievements and where appropriate their
levels.
►
Of course, at Breaside we very much have an open door
policy. If you have any concerns about your child’s
progress then please do not hesitate to make a
parent/teacher meeting.
