A
naysayer is someone who denies, refuses,
opposes, or is skeptical or cynical about
something.
 In rhetoric, the naysayer is also a rhetorical
device used to demonstrate the arguments
presented by the opposition.
 Naysayers MUST be identifiable.
 “People who are against abortion” or “prolife groups” are NOT adequate naysayers to
the “pro choice argument”. The “Pro Life
Action League”, however, would be.
State that you have already presented evidence.
 State that some individuals or groups might still
disagree.
 Mention these groups.
 Find a quote from these individuals or groups
that summarizes their positions.
 If their positions seem to defy reason and seem
illogical, you will simply quote them. Don’t say
that they are wrong. First explain what they say.
 State their reasons for thinking as they do.
 In a friendly way, introduce your last reason.

