Harvard University and Earning by
Learning’s Collaboration
• Thanks to a grant from the Smith Richardson Foundation, Dr. Roland
Fryer and his team in the Economics Department at Harvard
University will evaluate the Earning by Learning. The study will look
at the effect of monetary incentives on the amount of student reading.
Dr. Fryer will also evaluate the effect of incentives on student reading
ability,
• Dr. Fryer talks about the implications of the Harvard study with
Earning by Learning. “The achievement gap is perhaps America’s
most pressing domestic concern. Many elaborate attempts have been
made to close the gap, with little success. We propose to build on and
scientifically estimate the intuition educators and parents have had for
centuries-that incentives work. Our experiment presents a promising
and little explored avenue to combat the racial achievement gap by
providing small tangible incentives to children for them to learn
behavior that are in their long-term best interest.”

What’s happened…
2 Round Table Discussions and Ad
Hoc Committee Recommendations
Chamberlain’s, our official EBL restaurant, hosted two roundtable
discussions and lunch with EBL students, coordinators and other
prominent citizens within our communities. The roundtable discussions
focused on making reading a top priority in Dallas. Keeping children and
literacy first!
More recent 30 key community stakeholders (EBL’s ad hoc committee)
presented recommendations to assist in alerting and engaging Dallas
citizens in greater awareness of our city’s illiteracy crisis.

READ AND GIVE BACK
It is a novel way to teach children
the power of reading and the
gratification of helping others.
• All proceeds earned by the
students are donated to the
library.
• EBL students help the librarian to
select the books purchased.
• Their name is recorded on the
inside of each book donated.
Setting our goals high…
Earning by Learning introduces
Read and Graduate…from College
Each semester, many of the area's
most successful college graduates
are invited to discuss all aspects of
attaining a college degree, from
initial challenges to life-long
benefits.
Ultimately, Earning by Learning
students walk away with a real-life
association between current
reading and long-term success.
