The Travel Experience of
a Lifetime
1 It's good to know there are some places left in the
world, which are unspoilt. The far northwest of
China is such a place. Xinjiang, or New Territory, is
a beautiful land that has both deserts and
mountains.
2 Historically, Xinjiang was regarded as "the back of
beyond". Government officials who made mistakes
feared exile there, not only because of the dangers,
but also because it was a very long way from the
big cities of the eastern coast. But all that has
changed!

3 Nowadays, you can take a trip to this beautiful
region with the greatest of ease. The ideal way to
travel is by train—a long, leisurely trip through
deserts and mountains. For those travellers whose
time is limited, there are regular flights to
Xinjiang’s capital, Urumchi, from most parts of
China, and you can find up-to-date hotels there.
The busy streets and colorful markets draw
shoppers from all over the province. It's worth
spending a few days looking around this interesting
town.

4 The first place you should head for in Xinjiang is
Turpan—a four-hour bus journey from Urumchi.
Turpan gets its water from underground streams
which come from the snow-covered mountains in the
west. This is the second lowest place on the earth's
surface. It used to be called the "Land of Fire"
because it is extremely hot in summer. By contrast,
it is bitterly cold in winter. The best time to go
there is in the late summer and early autumn. This
is when the grape harvest takes place. On every
corner you can see bunches of ripe grapes for sale.
Those that are not eaten fresh are dried in the sun
to produce delicious raisins.

5 The next place you must visit is Heaven Lake.
The lake itself is clear and blue and is
surrounded by towering mountains. The tallest of
these are covered in snow. The banks of the lake
are covered in short grass and tall pine trees.
On a clear spring day, the view is breathtaking.

6 Like Mongolians, people of Xinjiang ride horses.
Traditionally, they are always on the move, finding
the best grass for their horses. Although the
people living near the lake have adapted to modern
life, they still move down to the village in freezing
winter months. Not only do they have electricity,
but they also offer accommodation to travellers.

Text
