Review of Current ACCESS for ELLs
Anchored in the WIDA ELD Standards
Test forms are divided into five grade-level clusters (K, 12, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12)
Each grade level cluster (except for K) has three forms
Tier A (Beginner)
Tier B (Intermediate)
Tier C (Advanced)
Addresses the four language domains (Listening,
Speaking, Reading, and Writing)

Benefits of the Online Test
• Increased student engagement through a more
dynamic testing experience
• Built-in accommodations and accessibility features
appropriate for a range of student needs
• Staged adaptivity targets students’ individual range of
language skills
• Increased ease for test administrators
• Logistical flexibility as a result of being able to
simultaneously administer multiple grades and proficiency
levels
• Central scoring by DRC for all four domains.
• Test Administrators will not need to determine tiers

Test Delivery
New Test Vendor
Data Recognition Corporation (DRC) will serve as the
operational test vendor for ACCESS for ELLs 2.0, both
online and paper.
DRC has extensive online testing experience and has
provided excellent customer support during the ACCESS
for ELLs 2.0 Field Test

Response Capture
Listening and Reading: student responses will be
captured digitally and scored by the online test engine
Speaking: student responses will be recorded (captured
digitally) and automatically sent to DRC for scoring by
trained raters
Writing: typed student responses will be recorded
(captured digitally) and automatically sent to DRC for
scoring by trained raters; handwritten responses will also
be returned to DRC for scoring

Order of Administration: Students’ performance on the
Listening and Reading tests will determine their
placement for Writing and Speaking.
• Listening and Reading: will be administered first. They
may be administered together or separately.
• Writing and Speaking: can be administered in either
order, after the Listening and Reading tests.

Plans for the Paper Test
New grade clusters:
Transitional form in 2015-16: Grade K, 1, 2, 3, 4-5, 6-8, 9-12
Beginning 2016-17: Grade clusters will align with the online
clusters
Media-delivered Listening and Speaking
Test Administrators will play pre-recorded prompts
Speaking: Updated Scoring Scale, Rules, and Procedures
Individually administered with pre-recorded prompts
Test Administrators will scorer student responses locally
