BENCHMARK #3 DOCUMENT BASED QUESTION HISTORICAL CONTEXT During the mid-1800s, tens of thousands of people migrated west. This period of westward expansion was called Manifest Destiny. It created opportunities as well as problems for the new settlers in the west. TASK Describe the various reasons why people migrated westward during the mid-1800s and the challenges they faced along the way. DOCUMENT 1 DOCUMENT 2 (PRESIDENT POLK ON EXPANSION) “We must ever maintain the principle that the people of this continent alone have the right to decide their own destiny. (It is) my duty to assert and maintain by all constitutional means the right of the United States to that portion of our territory which lies beyond the Rocky Mountains…Eighty years ago our population was confined on the west by the ridge of the Alleghenies…our people, increasing to many millions, have filled the eastern valley of the Mississippi, adventurously ascended the Missouri to its headsprings and are already engaged in establishing the blessings of self-government in valleys of which the rivers flow to the Pacific…To us belongs the duty of protecting them adequately wherever they may be upon our soil.” DOCUMENT 3 DOCUMENT 4 “So you see that all is not Gossip about California, after all, there is gold here in abundance, but it requires patience & hard labor, with some skill & experience to obtain it. If any man has his health & will work, he can make more than ten times as much here as he can in the states in the same length of time. But many, very many, that come here meet with bad success & thousands will leave their bones here. Others will loose their health, contract diseases that they will carry to their graves with them.” ESSAY Using the documents above, your answers to the questions in Part A, and your knowledge of Social Studies, write a well-developed essay that includes an introduction, supporting paragraphs and a conclusion. Include details and examples to support your answer. • Explain why thousands of Americans migrated westward during the 1800s. • Describe the challenges and hardships faced by pioneers traveling trails and establishing settlements in the west. •4/11/2014 • Why did Americans move westward during the 1800s?
